A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING MICHELLE KRISTA WINTER STRANGE FOR HER COMMITMENT AND NUMEROUS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE ANDERSON COMMUNITY.
Whereas, Michelle Krista Winter Strange has served as a faithful ambassador for the Anderson community and South Carolina since 1996. She has established a positive rapport with legislators, commissioners, businesses, and nonprofit agencies around South Carolina; and
Whereas, Mrs. Strange is not afraid to dream about community enhancement. She is willing to ask for input, research the facts, develop a game plan, effectively communicate the goal, develop community support, see the project to completion, and celebrate the community’s victory; and
Whereas, she avidly supports acceptance, understanding, tolerance, and inclusion. She oversees seven departments for Anderson County, each serving a different client base, all working to enhance the quality of life for Anderson County residents. Mrs. Strange has been a champion for Special Olympics, diversity, environmental issues, the arts, transportation, youth, and seniors; and
Whereas, she leads by example. Her passion to stand up for what she believes is right, and has converted naysayers and adversaries into allies; and
Whereas, Mrs. Strange has been a leader in the beautification of her community’s gateway along the Interstate 85 corridor. She assisted with planning, and much of the local fundraising, for the $165,000 Exit 14 project. During the past year, she has continued to negotiate with, and work through, the South Carolina Department of Transportation in finalizing plans for Exit 19, the community’s premiere gateway. Contributions from individuals, civic organizations, municipalities, colleges and universities, businesses, and both state and federal agencies have been an integral part of turning these projects into a reality; and
Whereas, her work for the environment does not stop there. She has spearheaded several other community beautification projects. She has led individuals and groups to pick up and prevent litter in Anderson County. She has also been a proponent of recycling; and
Whereas, Mrs. Strange does not only educate and empower volunteers, she offers herself as a volunteer to several organizations. Her work has a direct impact on the quality of life of area residents; and
Whereas, she has used her broad network of friends and colleagues to plug resources into places and projects where they will have the greatest impact. She has served with a variety of agencies in the community, both at the volunteer and board level. Some examples include: Electric City Rotary, Rape Crisis Center, United Methodist Women, Electric City Playhouse, Anderson Heritage, Inc., KAB, the Anderson County Arts Center, United Way, The Anderson Sunshine House, Junior Achievement, the Jaycees, and the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce; and
Whereas, Mrs. Strange has written applications that brought local, state, regional, and national recognition to agencies and individuals from Anderson County, including the prestigious J. Mitchell Graham Award, the Regional Cooperation Award, and the County Leader of the Year Award; and
Whereas, several awards have recognized and honored the work of Mrs. Strange and her staff in the area of the environment including: the “South Carolina Governor’s Pollution Prevention Award” in 2003, First Place for “The Waste Reduction Program” by Keep America Beautiful, Inc. in 2003, Second Place for “Affiliate of the Year” by Keep America Beautiful, Inc. in 2003, “Best Beautification Program in South Carolina” by Palmetto Pride in 2003, “Recycling Team of the Year” by Carolina Recycling Association in 2002, “Outstanding Local Government Waste Reduction/Recycling Program” by Carolina Recycling Association in 2002, “Jack Hirst Award/Recycling Coordinator of the Year” by South Carolina DHEC in 2002, and “Outstanding Local Government Waste Reduction/Recycling Program” by South Carolina DHEC in 2002; and
Whereas, some of her personal accolades include being named a Paul Harris Fellow in 2004, receiving a Certificate of Appreciation from American Legion Post 14 in 2002, being named “Volunteer of the Year” by Keep America Beautiful of Anderson County in 1999, earning the “Independent Publishing Company Publisher’s Award” and “Excellence Award” in 1999, and receiving the Independent Publishing Company Newsroom “Team Spirit Award” in 1998. She is also a 2005 graduate of Leadership South Carolina, a 2003 graduate of the Emergency Management Institute, and a 1998 graduate of Leadership Anderson; and
Whereas, a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she is the daughter of Bill and Carolyn Gowan, and the loving wife of Allen Strange; and
Whereas, her work for Anderson County government has spanned four and onehalf years; and
Whereas, April 22, 2005, marks the thirtyfifth anniversary of Earth Day. Accordingly, it is fitting for the General Assembly to recognize Michelle Krista Winter Strange who cares and has given so much for the environment and her community. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, hereby recognize and commend Michelle Krista Winter Strange for her commitment and numerous contributions to the Anderson Community.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Michelle Krista Winter Strange.
