2. Grant Opportunities

Marketing of Agricultural Products

Most grant funding in this area is provided by the US Department of Agriculture

(USDA) (www.usda.gov )

Marketing Services Branch (MSB) is part of USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service

-  Current research targets farmers markets, subscription agriculture, Internet marketing, identity preserved crop development, international marketing channels, and direct sales to restaurants, schools, institutions, and retail establishments:

These grants are available to producers on a regional basis. Western region applications are usually due in the fall (www.sare.org)

Emerging Markets Program, Foreign Agricultural Services, USDA

- assists in marketing to countries outside of the USA

Farmer-Rancher, Marketing Systems, and Organic Systems Grants, CSREES, USDA, SARE (see website above)

Market Development Cooperator Program, International Trade Administration, Dept of Commerce)

- grants provided to marketing associations/cooperatives to assist with export marketing ventures (http://www.doc.gov/)

Markets and Trade, Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR), USDA

- 3- phase funding: feasibility research on marketing strategy or technique, in- depth research, and implementation.

Value-Added Agricultural Development Grant Program (VADG), Rural Business Cooperative Service, USDA

-  provides grants to independent producers for feasibility/planning or start-up capital

-  The Agriculture Marketing Resource Center may provide assistance in developing a proposal.

Organic Farming

While mainstream agricultural funding can be used for organic products, a small number of private funding sources are available that focuses specifically on organic. These are applicable to California.
