A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE YELLOW JACKETS OF GREER HIGH SCHOOL ON WINNING THE 2003 STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN CLASS AAA.

Whereas, the Greer High School Yellow Jackets defeated West Florence High School by a score of 3317 to win the 2003 Class AAA state football championship on December 6, 2003, at WilliamsBrice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina; and

Whereas, in defeating West Florence, the Yellow Jackets secured their fourth state football crown, the first since 1994, gaining 324 total yards for 16 first downs and having their own junior Arthur Sitton named as the Most Valuable Player; and

Whereas, the Yellow Jackets completed the 2003 season with a 132 record, outscoring their opponents by an incredible 534239 point margin; and

Whereas, underrated and unrecognized, the Greer High School Yellow Jackets advanced to the state football finals by winning last second victories over archrivals Greenville and Union after being eliminated from the playoffs by Union High School for the last four years; and

Whereas, during the 2003 football season, Dooley Field in Greer has been packed with thousands of loyal Greer fans, playing host to the largest crowd ever in the victory against Greenville High School; and

Whereas, in three years as head coach, Travis Perry has compiled an astonishing 339 overall record; and

Whereas, in the state championship game “Greer carved up West Florence with the precision of a master chef attacking a Christmas turkey” according to The Greer Citizen; and

Whereas, Yellow Jacket football makes Greer a special community of unity, energy and pride; and

Whereas, the Senate of South Carolina, and especially Greer High School’s proudest alumna, Senator J. Verne Smith, is pleased to have this opportunity to recognize the Yellow Jackets of Greer and to salute them for their outstanding accomplishments on the football field and in the classroom. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates the Yellow Jackets of Greer High School on winning the 2003 State Football Championship in Class AAA.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Head Coach Travis Perry of the Greer High School Yellow Jackets football team.
