A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO EXTEND THE APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO CAPTAIN SAMMY BRELAND OF BEAUFORT, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AS FIRE MARSHAL OF BEAUFORT AND PORT ROYAL, TO THANK HIM FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF SERVICE TO THIS STATE AND TO BEAUFORT COUNTY THROUGH HIS COURAGEOUS WORK IN FIREFIGHTING, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, preventing fires and learning fire safety is of the utmost importance in the State of South Carolina; and
Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the great achievements of those brave individuals who have dedicated their lives to improving South Carolina’s fire regulations and to protecting the citizens of this State from injury by fire; and
Whereas, Captain Sammy Breland of Beaufort will retire from the position of Fire Marshal of Beaufort and Port Royal on May 1, 2003, and has devoted his professional career to ensuring the safety of the residents of Beaufort and working to prevent fires in the county; and
Whereas, for thirty years, he has tirelessly given his time and energy to upholding the characteristics that are essential to be a member of the honorable profession of firefighting; and
Whereas, since 1973, the Beaufort Fire Department and the Port Royal Fire Department have made tremendous strides with Captain Breland as their leader, and during his many years as Fire Marshal, he has seen the fire department grow to having three paid staff officers, including a chief, twenty-seven firefighters, three fire stations, and eleven fire apparatuses, including two aerial tower trucks; and
Whereas, Captain Breland has contributed his knowledge and expertise to Beaufort and Port Royal Fire Departments while carrying out the responsibilities of enforcing the Fire and Life Safety Codes in public buildings and businesses and investigating all fires in both Beaufort and Port Royal; and
Whereas, his sincerity and hard work will be deeply missed by the staff of the Beaufort and Port Royal Fire Departments and by the people of Beaufort County; and
Whereas, upon his retirement, Captain Breland will continue to give his special skills to the community as a volunteer firefighter and is looking forward to spending more time with his wife of twenty-two years, Myrna Breland, and their children, Kayla and Jason. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives extend their appreciation to Captain Sammy Breland of Beaufort on the occasion of his retirement as Fire Marshal of Beaufort and Port Royal, thank him for his many years of service to this State and to Beaufort County through his courageous work in firefighting, and wish him much success and happiness in his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Captain Sammy Breland of Beaufort.
