A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE ADMINISTRATION, FACULTY, STAFF, AND SUPPORTERS OF ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CATHOLIC SCHOOL IN GREENVILLE FOR SUCCESSFULLY NURTURING MORE THAN FIVE THOUSAND YOUNGSTERS IN A FRANCISCAN ENVIRONMENT OF LOVE, PEACE, AND SECURITY SINCE 1951 AND WISH THEM CONTINUED SUCCESS IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION.

Whereas, in the early 1950’s the Franciscan Friars of Holy Name Province and the parishioners of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Greenville, South Carolina, sought to established a school for the AfricanAmerican children of the parish as well as the children of all families in the neighborhood; and

Whereas, this goal was realized on September 8, 1951 when St. Anthony of Padua School was opened in a renovated house on Douthit Street and staffed by the Sisters of St. Francis of Stella, Niagara, New York; and

Whereas, in 1956 a modern brick building was constructed and housed students in kindergarten through the eighth grade; and

Whereas, since its establishment St. Anthony’s alumni have become judges, attorneys, teachers, businessmen and businesswomen, nurses, doctors, actors, and religious leaders; and

Whereas, in the last fifteen years, ninetyeight percent of the children who attended St. Anthony’s have graduated from high school and eightyfive percent of those graduates have pursued college degrees; and

Whereas, it is commendable that each student comes to St. Anthony’s each day ready to learn and leaves each day a stronger individual due to the incorporation of Christian values into the curriculum and the family atmosphere at the school; and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations to recognize the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School’s long tradition of providing a sound education to the children of its parish and those in the surrounding communities. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend the administration, faculty, staff, and supporters of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School in Greenville for successfully nurturing more than five thousand youngsters in a Franciscan environment of love, peace, and security since 1951 and wish them continued success in the field of education.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Sister Catherine Noecker, Principal, St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School.
