Job title: Maths Sessional Tutor

Department: SkylightCroydon

Reporting to: Functional Skills Coordinator

Aim

  • Teach maths from Entry Level 1 to Level 2 to homeless and vulnerable adults in order to encourage life-long learning.

Circumstances

  • A satisfactory enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service is required for this role.
  • This is a part time role (2-6 hours per week)

Salary

  • £22.25 per hour

Principle Accountabilities

Recruitment and assessment

  • Recruit and select learners on the basis of need
  • Undertake full initial, diagnostic, formative assessments for maths
  • Undertake and prepare learners for internal and external summative assessments as appropriate
  • Devise and implement the five staged process of Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement (RARPA) and complete certificates as appropriate

Teaching and learning support

  • Teach and support learning in accordance with best practice for the member group
  • Good knowledge of Adult Numeracy Core Curriculum and Functional Maths Curriculum
  • Plan, reflect and review each learner’s programme on a regular basis and complete and update the member database regularly
  • Prepare and use suitable, differentiated and good quality learning materials
  • Maintain knowledge of online maths learning resources and be able to implement a maths online learning programme
  • Prepare schemes of work and lesson plans in accordance with standard practice
  • Share learning materials, skills and expertise with other Skylight centres.
  • Establish and maintain standards of conduct with and for the learners
  • Signpost learners to support in receiving and upholding their entitlements
  • Adhere to departmental policies when dealing with aggressive or challenging behaviour
  • Ensure all learning activity aids the progression of members
  • Carry out individual learning plans and regular reviews
  • Update the member database with progression plans and ensure referrals are successfully made with Progression, Wellbeing, Employability Services Team and learning support unit
  • Signpost learners to other suitable external agencies if necessary
  • Be able to develop and deliver a functional numeracy programme from Entry 1 to level 2
  • Take responsibility for ensuring high quality, efficiency and appropriate differentiation
  • Liaise with functional skills tutors from other Skylight centres, keep up- to– date with changes to qualifications in maths
  • Willing and able to work in a range of environments including outreach settings
  • Ensure that any safeguarding concerns are identified and reported in line with Crisis’ procedures

Certification and quality assurance

  • Assess the learner’s progress and attainments against the standard set for the programme
  • Keep appropriate assessment records and track the inform progression
  • Liaise as required with internal moderators and attend internal moderation meetings
  • Maintain and provide required records for accountability purposes
  • Ensure deliver of the agreed programme of activities take responsibility for ensuring high quality and efficiency
  • Ensure activities are evaluated under Crisis guidelines
  • Welcome termly peer observations to support quality and professional development

General

  • Actively encourage and support member involvement within Crisis
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of Crisis’ work and the needs and circumstances of homeless people
  • Comply with Crisis policies and procedures, including Health and Safety policies, for which all employees owe a duty of care both to themselves and others, in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act
  • Carry out any other duties that may reasonably be required in the light of the main purpose of the job

Person Specification

Essential

1.Hold a practical teaching qualification for example Postgraduate Certificate of Education, Certificate of Education or equivalent, with a subject specialism in numeracy

2.Experience of delivering functional maths in an adult education environment, from entry level up to level 2

3.Previous experience working with vulnerable, disengaged or hard to reach adults who may have challenging behaviour.

4.Ability to keep accurate and up to date records, sharing information as and when appropriate

5.Excellent communication, both written and verbal, and presentation skills

6.Proven organizational skills including an ability to prioritize, be self-motivated and have good time-management skills

7.A capacity to work both on your own and as part of a team together with a willingness to reflect on and develop own practice

8.A passion for innovative learning, creativity and encouraging individuals’ competency in functional skills

9.Knowledge of and ability to comply with safeguarding procedures

10.Commitment to Crisis’ purpose and values including equality and social inclusion

Desirable

11.Hold an Assessors Award and be able to internally assess a range of qualifications: skills for life, functional skills, employability skills and RARPA

12.Experience of teaching GCSE maths programmes
