What is the Lamp of Learning Award?

The Lamp of Learning Award is presented by the Washington Elementary School District (WESD) to staff, volunteers, community members and businesspartners who have made outstanding contributions to the students of the WESD. This prestigious award is the highest recognition given in the Washington District. Its objective is to recognize those who have dedicated themselves to improving the quality of education in the WESD and in the State while exemplifying the Vision, Mission and Values of the WESD.

Who is eligible to receive the Lamp of Learning Award?

Any employee or patron (volunteer, community member or business partner) of the Washington Elementary School District may be nominated. Previous recipients are not eligible.

Who may nominate a person for the Lamp of Learning Award?

Any employee or patron of the Washington Elementary School District may nominate.

When is the nomination deadline?

All nominations and letters of supportmust be received by Carol Donaldson, director of Communication Services, WESD Administrative Center, 4650 W. Sweetwater Avenue, Glendale, AZ 85304,
by5 p.m., Tuesday, January 20, 2015.

What must the nomination include?

A Lamp of Learning nomination must include:

  1. A Lamp of Learning Nomination Form cover page.
  2. Responses to the statements on page2 or 3.
  3. A minimum of two letters of support (from individuals other than the nominator) that focus on specific experiences that relate to statement(s) on page 2 or 3.

Why is a principal's/administrator’s signature needed?

The signature ensures that the nominee’s principal/administrator is fully aware of the nomination.

Who judges the nominations?

A panel of former Lamp of Learning recipients, along with members of the District Recognition Team, will review the nominations. The panel will be given a scoring rubric and base its selections on the criteria and examples presented in the nomination material.

When will the awards be presented?

The Lamp of Learning Awards will be presented at the annual Lamp of Learning Celebration to be held on Friday, May 1, 2015. All recipients will be notified in advance.

  4. Responses to the statements on page 2 or 3.
  5. A minimum of two lettersof support (from individuals other than the nominator) that are:
  6. labeled with the name of the nominee and the category.
  7. focused on specific experiences that relate to statement(s) on page 2 or 3.
  8. unique and reflect the experience and opinion of the letter’s author.

The quality of letters, not the quantity, is the primary consideration of the selection committee.

  1. Each individual nominee must have a separate cover page, responses and letters.(Multiple nominees will not be accepted on one nomination form).
