A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO COMMEND MRS. WILHELMENIA DENNIS SCOTT OF SUMTER COUNTY FOR HER MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE AND TO CONGRATULATE HER FOR BEING NAMED ITS 2001 HUMANITARIAN OF THE YEAR.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina recognize the numerous and varied contributions of Wilhelmenia Dennis Scott and praise her for being named the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People 2001 Humanitarian of the Year; and
Whereas, Mrs. Scott was born in Rembert, South Carolina, to Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Dennis, Sr. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Morris College in Sumter, a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in New York City, and continued her education at the University of South Carolina with postgraduate study; and
Whereas, she began teaching in Sumter County District Two in elementary, junior, and senior high schools and was eventually promoted to the position of Junior High School Guidance Counselor; and
Whereas, Mrs. Scott is a devoted member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church where she teaches Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, directs the Sunbeam Choir, organized the Junior Missionary Ministry, was on the Board of the Woman’s Auxiliary for the Wateree Association, L. D., and was the Assistant Secretary of the Wateree Association, L. D.; and
Whereas, she served on the Board of the United Way of Sumter, Lee, and Clarendon Counties and was an organizer and the first Worthy Matron of Catchall Chapter 315 Order of the Eastern Star. She is a lifetime member of the Sumter County NAACP, a member of the Democratic Party, and Poll Manager of Rembert Precinct I; and
Whereas, Mrs. Scott and her husband, the Reverend Otis Scott, Sr., have three children, Myrtle Scott Johnson, the Reverend Otis Scott, Jr., and Linda Scott Norwood; seven grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren; and
Whereas, the General Assembly is proud to recognize Mrs. Wilhelmenia Dennis Scott for her lifetime devotion to helping others and for her being named the NAACP 2001 Humanitarian of the Year. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend Mrs. Wilhelmenia Dennis Scott of Sumter County for her many years of dedicated service to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and congratulate her for being named its 2001 Humanitarian of the Year.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Wilhelmenia Dennis Scott of Sumter County.
