A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE AND COMMEND BOB JONES UNIVERSITY ON ITS SEVENTYFIFTH ANNIVERSARY, TO RECOGNIZE ITS DISTINGUISHED RECORD OF ACHIEVING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, AND FOR ITS INVALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS IN DEVELOPING MORAL CHARACTER IN YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN WHO ARE THE FUTURE LEADERS OF OUR COMMUNITIES, STATES, AND NATION.

Whereas, Bob Jones College was founded in College Point, Florida, in 1927 by wellknown evangelist Dr. Bob Jones, Sr., and moved to Cleveland, Tennessee, in 1933; and

Whereas, Bob Jones University gladly moved to its current location in Greenville in 1947 at the warm invitation of its civic leaders; and

Whereas, Bob Jones University has become the largest private liberal arts university in the State, and draws students to South Carolina from all fifty states and over forty foreign countries; and

Whereas, Bob Jones University provides academic and character training to over thirty-six thousand students daily via live interactive remote classrooms; and

Whereas, Bob Jones University averages over seven thousand manhours of service to the Greenville community annually through its Community Relations Council and maintains a regular stream of volunteer services to needy members of the community by approximately forty percent of its student body; and

Whereas, Bob Jones University contributes more than sixty million dollars annually to the local economy through its students, faculty, staff, visitors, and taxes; and

Whereas, Bob Jones University supplies Greenville schools with teachers, including the Teacher of the Year for 20002001 and 20012002 and provides leadership for many Greenvillerelated projects, such as the restoration of the Poinsett Hotel, the sculpture of Shoeless Joe Jackson, and the revitalization of the North Pleasantburg corridor; and

Whereas, Bob Jones University attracts over twenty thousand visitors to the Greenville area annually; and

Whereas, Bob Jones University houses the Bob Jones University Museum and Gallery, the finest collection of religious art in the Western Hemisphere; and

Whereas, Bob Jones University offers the annual Easter program, The Living Gallery, for the enjoyment of almost nine thousand visitors from Greenville and surrounding states and presents a wholesome array of cultural and artistic entertainment for the entire community through its Artist Series programs, and stages the only production of Grand Opera in the Upstate; and

Whereas, Bob Jones University has matriculated over seventy-two thousand six hundred students since coming to Greenville and has produced among its graduates thirty-two college presidents; and

Whereas, Bob Jones University is the largest educational publisher in South Carolina; and

Whereas, Bob Jones University’s distinguished leadership has exhibited extraordinary astuteness in developing policies and taking action on complex educational and social issues that impact our State and nation; and

Whereas, Bob Jones University’s leadership, faculty, and administrators are highly esteemed by the community, students, and parents. Now, therefore, pursuant to a motion by Senator David L. Thomas,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Bob Jones University on its seventyfifth anniversary and recognize and commend the university for its academic excellence, volunteer service, community spirit, and for its dedicated programs to develop strong families and spiritually healthy individuals that have had and will continue to have a positive effect on the future of our State and nation.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the President of Bob Jones University.
