A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF SARAH BESS MCCOLLUM SMITH OF UNION COUNTY UPON HER DEATH AND EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the Senate were saddened to learn of the recent death of Sarah Bess McCollum Smith, a Magistrate of Union County, on Friday, April 12, 2002, at age 72; and

Whereas, Sarah Bess Smith was born in Newberry, South Carolina on December 29, 1929; and

Whereas, Sarah Bess Smith was a graduate of Whitmire High School and attended Newberry College; and

Whereas, Sarah Bess Smith retired as an office manager with B&H Motors of Union; and

Whereas, Sarah Bess Smith served the people of Union County as magistrate with dignity, thoughtfully described by her peers as an attentive person who listened to the people, who was always willing to serve, and a credit to her profession; and

Whereas, she was a member of Carlisle United Methodist Church where she served as church treasurer and was an original member of the Carlisle Willing Workers, a group formed to raise money to build a new sanctuary for the church; and

Whereas, she was a member of the Virginia Health Bible Class of Grace United Methodist Church, a member of Clemson Extension, the Home Garden Club, and was an active member of the Union Yellow Jackets Booster Club, and she served as a board member of the Salvation Army; and

Whereas, Sarah Bess Smith was a loving mother and grandmother. Surviving are her husband, Jesse Harold Smith; her daughter, Sarah Nichols Smith of Chapin; her two sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny D. and Becky K. Smith of Atlanta, Georgia, and Harold Whitney and Anita E. Smith of Carlisle; her sister, Bertice Teague of Whitmire; and eight grandchildren, Katherine M. Smith, Andrew W. Smith, DeWitt S. Smith and Zachary E. Smith, all of Atlanta, Georgia, and Carol J. Smith, Daniel L. Smith, Daisy W. Smith, and Hannah S. Smith, all of Carlisle. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate hereby express the deepest sympathy to the family and many friends of Sarah Bess McCollum Smith of Union County upon her death.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Sarah Bess McCollum Smith.
