2001-10-01ChronicleBILLY BAILEY ANGEL 75, passed away at a Baytown Hospital Saturday Morning, September 29, 2001. Mr Angel was born February 27, 1926 in Livingston Texas and enlisted to defend his country with the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific during the second World War . Mr. Angel relocated to the Baytown area in 1946 and was an employee of Humble Oil and Refinery until founding Angel Brother Enterprises in 1970. Mr. Angel was the driving force behind the growth of the family construction company and directed his sons into many other business enterprises including convenience stores, land development, Houston Raceway Park motorsports facility and other successful ventures that his family continues to operate on the principles he set forth. Mr. Angel was an avid supporter of the Baytown Youth Fair Association and also very active in local community and civic organizations. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Baytown and a member of the Goose Creek Masonic Lodge #1192. In his later years Mr. Angel expanded on his love of farming and began raising cattle in the Baytown area as well as his ranch in South Texas. Almost a day would not go by that Mr. Angel would not survey the herd. Preceded in death by his wife Eutha Carpenter Angel, mother Lizzie Placker Angel and father Frank Angel, Sr. and siblings Hiram Angel, Frank Angel, Elbert Angel, Lazz Angel, Bruce Angel, Marion Angel Pace, Marie Angel Harrison, and Grace Angel Sublett. Survived by one sister, three sons and their wives, and eight grandchildren. His surviving sister Beulah Angel Goodman, Children and grandchildren Glenn and Lori Angel, their children Ashley, Seth, Derek and Montgomery, Greg and Luanne Angel, their children Chance, Billy Chase, and Austin, and Gary and Tanya, their children, Slate and Breelan all of Baytown. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and special caring friends GiGi Labarrie, and Alicia Andrew. Mr. Angel will be carried to his final resting place by Paul Bearers, Chance Angel, Billy Chase Angel, Austin Angel, Seth Angel, Derek Angel, Slate Angel, Ken Taylor, Harold Lynn Scarborough and Freddy Catchings. Honorary Paul Bearers will be his granddaughters Ashley Angel, Breelan Angel, and Montgomery Angel as well as all of the employees and associates at Angel Brothers Enterprises. 2001-10-01ChronicleWILLIAM WILBUR EVANS, 80, passed away September 29, 2001, after a brave fight against cancer. He was born in Dallas, Texas, the son of William and Margaret Evans. He will be loved and missed by his wife of 51 years, Jonabeth Evans; his children, Valerie Pleak and soninlaw Thomas Pleak, Joseph Evans, Adrienne Evans, Waverly Evans, and Jennifer Evans; his brothers and sisters John Evans, Eloise Hoffman, Bobby Evans, and Suzanne Dickson; grandchildren Helena, Katrina, and Rory. The family wants to thank each and every one of those who gave their loving support. Raised in Dallas, Wilbur served in the US Navy as lieutenant JG during World War II (19441946) aboard USS Upshur protecting the Atlantic coast. He earned degrees in Civil Engineering from Texas Tech and Architectural Engineering from UT Austin. Wilbur began his career as a general manager of Mooney Aircraft in Kerrville and for 35 years was an engineer and engineering project manager at Brown & Root with expertise in design of multimilliondollar concrete structures and water transportation systems. His engineering projects spanned Project Mohole, buildings at the Johnson Space Center, and Houston's drinking water reservoirs. His most outstanding achievement was working as Chief Engineer during the early 1980s on the Libyan National Water System, known as the largest manmade water transportation system in the history of mankind. He was a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and Texas Tech Alumni Association. Since 1959 he was an active member of St. Mark's Methodist Church, sang in the choir, and for many years served as church project engineer. Members of St. Mark's voted him the Brother Ed Award Recipient for 1997, recognizing over 30 years of sustained ministry. We remember him as golfer, genealogist, handyman, husband, father, and friend. Visitation will occur 68 p.m., Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Heights Funeral Home. 2001-10-01ChronicleOLIVE MARIE GAUDET, born October 3, 1904 in Thibodaux, Louisiana to Oliver Gaudet and Bertha Toups Gaudet. She spent her childhood in the countryside of Bayou Lafourche, Louisiana where she learned to cook Cajun style food as well as classic French food and the arts of embroidery, tatting and knitting (all talents she shared with her family and many friends). Olive attended the University of Southwest Louisiana and later the University of St. Thomas. She served as Assistant to the President of the University of Southwest Louisiana from 1922 1936 before moving to Houston. Employed by Humble Oil and Refining Co. (Exxon Mobile) from 1936 1964 rising from secretarial duties to Systems Analyst. Retired from Humble Oil in 1964 and began her second "career" as a volunteer activist. Mrs. Gaudet was a recipient of many awards for her selfless service including "Bishop's Medal of Recognition for Service", 1972; "Outstanding Volunteer of the Year", 1973; Volunteer Activist Award, Voluntary Action Center of Houston and Harris County, 1978; and her most treasured, the Papal Medal awarded by Pope John Paul II for "excellent and zealous works". Mrs. Gaudet founded St. Theresa's Little Flower Thrift Shop in 1973. This shop provided food and clothing, at no cost, for all people in need, regardless of their race, religious affiliation or circumstances. All were welcome. Her fluency in French was very useful in helping the Little Flower provide clothing to the numerous Vietnamese immigrants who visited the shop. She was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church where she served in many volunteer capacities. Survivors include sister, Carmen Newton; niece, Clare Norman and husband, Jack; nephew, Dan Newton and wife, Betty; grandnieces and nephews, Trae Norman and wife Lisa, Tim Norman, Tina Norman, Chris Newton and wife Lisbet,Melissa Hanson and husband Robert; greatgreat nephews, Daniel Newton and Ty Norman; her dearest friend and coworker, Catherine Swilley and caregiver, Lettie Seals.
