Literacy Navigator 2012

1. How long will Navigator 1.0 be supported in materials, trainings, PD, ARO, COL and Pearson support?

Literacy Navigator 1.0 will still be available for purchase at least a year after the 2012 edition is released, if not longer. The duration of the program will be based upon current demand, inventory levels and customer contracts. It would be something that inventory and the business unit would discuss when the time comes.

2. What is the difference between 1.0 and 2.0 in each level?

Each module has been re-leveled:

  • Level AA now Level A (grade 4) – Environmental Citizenship
  • Level A now Level B (grade 5) – Endangered Species
  • Level B now Level C (grade 6) – Habitats
  • Level C now Level E (grade 8) – Adaptation
  • Level D now NEW level D (grade 7) – Extreme Weather

The Introduction in the TE has been minimized, with only a brief description of the Construction-Integration Model and a concise summary of comprehension strategies that build the textbase and mental model. The more detailed research supporting the Construction-Integration Model will now be available on Community of Learning and Playbook.

Every level includes some new text as well as some of the old pieces. Only Level D is completely new. Most of the text that focused on people (ie., Native Americans), has been replaced with more animal or nature-focused topics.

We now have international rights to all the readings included in each level.

All assessments, including formative assessments and checkpoints, have been revised to reflect the changes in the levels and the texts. Open-ended response questions continue to be available for assessment of student learning. Level Locators are not currently in the works for the 2012 edition.

Extension Modules have not been revised. Each Level now consists of only the Foundations Module plus the Word Study Module.

In the TE, there is more information available for the teacher in the form sidebars. Common Core Standards are embedded and referred to specifically within each lesson, as referenced in sidebars. Icons, such as the Common Core Standards icon, make it easier for teachers to identify specific pieces of support information in sidebars.

3. Will more grade levels be included in the new version?

Literacy Navigator 2012 will cover grades 4 – 8.

4. Is the new version still addressing reading informational text?

Yes – the Foundations module still focuses on comprehending complex text.

5. Will there be more lessons included, or is the length of the Base Pack the same number of lessons?

Lessons in the Base pack remain the same – Foundations with 30 lessons and Word Study with 15 lessons.

6. Will there be additional Extension pack titles?

Foundations and Word Study are the only modules that will be offered. Foundations contains 30 lessons and Word Study contains 15 lessons. Foundations provides enough material to cover an entire year and Word Study provides enough material for a semester that can be spanned throughout the year.

7. Will the Pre- and Post-Test be online with reading selections or will each SE include both tests as in the 1.0 material?

They will be handled in the same manner as Literacy Navigator 1.0. The pre-tests and post-tests are both delivered in the kits with the SEs. There is one doc for each. They are also available online on ARO. Schools can administer them on paper or online. Both the hardcopy and ARO versions have the readings included.

8. Will the reading levels be correlated to Lexile scores?

The text complexity of these readings was/will be determined by a qualitative assessment. Each reading was/will be compared to the text exemplars for informational texts provided in Appendix B of the Common Core State Standards using criteria such as purpose, structure, language conventionality and clarity, and knowledge demands. Through this comparative process, each reading was/will be assigned to a text complexity band as defined by the Common Core State Standards.

9. Will the same reading passages be used in the 2.0 version? Or will new passages be there instead?

There is a combination of some new passages and some old passages in each Level except the new Level D. Titled Extreme Weather, Level D is the only Level that is completely new.

10. Can teachers use the current version and just order new SE materials or must all new materials be ordered?

It is recommended teacher and student editions of the 1.0 version be used together while the teacher and student editions of the 2012 version be used together. The content within each level has drastically changed between the old and new edition, including an entirely new level (Level D: Extreme Weather). Many of the modules have been rewritten and edited in the 2012 edition.

11. Will there be a cross over document on how the current version uses CCSSELA standards?

No additional marketing material will be created for the 1.0 edition. For the new 2012 edition, there will be a Common Core document available that calls out examples in modules of where the standard is met.

12. Is the lesson structure the same, or will teachers need additional training to implement the new version?

The Lesson structure remains the same to Literacy Navigator 1.0. Each lesson has four parts:

  • Introduction
  • Work Time
  • Guided Practice
  • Reflection

13. How will the ARO diagnostic data be different for the new version?

The diagnostic data in ARO reports will be the same as the diagnostic data in version 1.
