Below you will find a list of supplemental social studies materials, that I am suggesting for purchase. These materials will be beneficial to me as I teach social studies in the secondary grades.
Video Tapes
1. Glory $19.95
This video will present my students with a stunning visual depiction of African Americans during the Civil War and what they had to go through in order to become soldiers. This movie is perfect to use when discussing the Civil War and how it affected African Americans and how in the end they fought to gain their freedom.
2. The Last of the Mohicans$14.98
This video will show my students what life was like during the French and Indian War before the founding of America. This romantic adventure is a good way to keep students interested in colonial American history. The battle scenes are also a good way of showing how beginning gun warfare appeared.
3. The Century$74.99
This set of six videos, which is hosted by Peter Jennings, is an overview of the 20th century. These videos can be used many times during the year to emphasize many thins such as: World War II, the Depression, McCarthyism, The Cold War, Vietnam, and the Jazz Age.
4. Dear America: Letters Home From Vietnam$19.98
This spectacular video is a great way in showing students how Vietnam soldiers felt during the war. Famous actors read letters for real soldiers while 1960’s and 70’s period music is played in the background. News footage and home movies are also shown throughout the music. This is perfect for upper level students.
Enrichment Reading Books
1. The Americans $45.00
This set of three books explains how the American way of government was developed over its history. The books also explain how America came to be an interconnected nation and culture. The books described such American ways of life like: The Quakers, The Puritans, Al Capone, urban renewal, and broadcasting.
2. The American Dream - The 50’s: Our American Century$29.95
This book is excellent when studying the 1950’s. The pictures in the book are taken from Life magazine. The book discusses many diverse subjects pertaining to the 1950’s including: sports, the Cold War, suburbia, television, and much more.
Computer Programs
1. American History: Resource Link $116.95
This set of four CD’s appears to cover a lot of ground and would be perfect for an American history class. Each disk discusses a different time period: early America, 18th century, 19th century, and 20th century. You can create slide shows, multimedia presentations, and incorporate any of the text or visuals into presentations.
2. Castle Explorer$29.95
This CD-ROM takes students on an interactive journey through a 14th century castle, with 3-D options available for viewing a castle. Perfect for medieval European or World History.
Games or Simulations
1. Discovery: A Simulation of Early American Colonization$66.00
This simulation takes about three weeks to play and breaks students into groups. Each group has to use map skills to cross the ocean to reach America and then pick a site to settle on. Students play different roles in their colony and must make key decisions among their group and among the other groups.
2. Civil War: A Simulation of Civilian and Soldier Life During the American Civil War, 1861 – 1865 $75.00
This simulation can take anywhere from seven to thirty-two weeks depending on how in-depth a teacher prefers to get. Students draw a card to figure out if they are Union or Confederate and cover the whole range of the war from battles to the home front. The game can also be played indoors or outside depending on the teacher’s preference.
