LAB 1

1. The data for the labs can be found at the address: J:\isis.unc.edu\html\courses\2008spring\geog\370\006

To access data, I need to double click on the My Computer icon and navigate to the J: drive. Then follow each part of the address and click on the folders that correspond in the order of the address: isis, html, courses, 2008spring, geog, 370, and finally 006.

2. Print screen of AFS ACL:

3. The drive letter of my home directory is H:\

I could save my labs on either network space on my home directory in H:\private or on the GEOG 370 class directory (J:\isis\html\courses\2008spring\geog\370\006\students\moemily) in a folder titled Lab1 (which I will do before each lab is due to ensure that it was turned in on time). I could also save my lab to my personal flashdrive.

4. If I were working on a computer in an ATN lab and wanted to save my work to a location where only I could see it, I would save it to my home directory privately at H:\private.

5. If I had a webpage at UNC, my URL would be:

6.

7. A layer is one set of particular geographic data that is embedded into a single spatial data model and can be represented on a map. One or more layers at a time can be viewed on a GIS map. For example, one layer could be all the hotels in the San Diego area and another layer could be all the major attractions. We can view these both together or separately.

8. A feature is something used to manage data that is placed on a map such as a point, line or polygon (area).

9. A large scales has fine resolution and has a large ratio (with a small denominator). A small scale is coarse resolution and is a small ratio (with a large denominator). An example is that 1:400,000 would be small scale with coarse resolution while 1:100 or even 1:1000 would be large scale with finer resolution (with 1:100 being a larger scale than 1:1000).

10. The two views in ArcMap are layout view and data view. Layout view is like an outline of the data, while data view allows you to see more detail and work more closely with the data. In layout view there is the locator map of the United States along with regular map elements like the north arrow, legend and scale bar; these are missing from data view, which allows you to only see one map at a time (whichever has the active data frame). Layout View also allows one to view multiple Data Frames at the same time.
