The rules of basketball exist to provide a safe and fair playing environment for both teams, regardless of talent or skill level. Understanding the game of basketball isn't possible without first learning the various rules, fouls, violations and the penalties associated with each. Whether you're a player or a coach, understanding the rules of basketball can help you elevate your game to the next level.

SCORING:

·  2 point field goal – shot made from anywhere inside the 3 point arc

·  3 point field goal – shot made from anywhere outside the 3 point arc

·  1 point free throw – unguarded shot taken from the foul line

SKILLS:

·  Dribbling – bouncing the ball with one hand

·  Passing – moving the ball by throwing, chest, bounce, or lob pass

·  Rebounding – the recovering of a shot that bounces off the backboard or rim

·  Boxing out – a player’s position between an opposing player and the basket to obtain a better rebounding position

·  Shooting – throwing the ball to make a basket

·  Pivoting – holding one foot in the same spot while rotating on the other.

PERSONAL FOULS: an infraction by a player or team that carries a heavier weight that a simple violation. After a certain number of fouls a player is ejected, and after a certain number of team fouls the opposing team will shoot free throws.

·  Blocking – impeding the progress of an opponent by extending one or both arms horizontally or getting in the path of a moving player

·  Charging – running into a stationary player while in possession of the ball

·  Illegal use of hands – (hacking) hitting the hand or arm of the person in control of the ball

·  Holding – grabbing your opponent

VIOLATIONS: results in a change of possession with the team in bounding the ball

·  Traveling – any time a player is not dribbling, they must keep one foot stationary, if they move both feet it is traveling

·  Carry/palming – when a dribbler brings their palm under the ball

·  Double dribble – a player dribbles the ball with both hands at the same time or they stop and then start their dribble again.

·  3 seconds – an offensive player remains in the key for 3 seconds

·  Goaltending – when a defensive player illegally interferes with a shot on its downward path to the basket

TERMS:

·  Air ball – a shot that completely misses the rim and backboard

·  Dunk – to throw the ball down into the basket with the hand above rim level

·  Bank shot – a shot where the ball is first bounced off the backboard at such an angle it then drops into the basket

·  Crossover dribble – when a player dribbles the ball across his or her body from one hand to the other

·  Layup – a shot taken after driving to the basket by leaping off of one foot and using one hand to lay the ball off the backboard and into the hoop.

·  Screen – a player stands between a teammate and a defender to give their teammate a chance to take an open shot, you cannot move your feet
