2 – Foundations courses

The Foundations courses are free one-hour weekly creative courses in Drama, Music and Dance Foundations, which run once a term for 10 weeks. They run in two age groups; 7-11 years and 12-18 years. The sessions use a variety of games and activities in a fun and friendly environment. The focus of the sessions is to help build confidence, increase self-esteem and raise aspirations.

The courses aim to give young people both the personal and practical skills to then progress onto the other classes that we have at The Garage, on the class programme. Each week, new skills are taught and explored creatively by the group, with a particular focus on building confidence and developing teamwork.

These courses would suit young people who are interested in performing arts, in particular Dance, Music or Drama. It is not essential for the young person to have a strong interest or any prior experience in the arts, as the courses areaimed at any young person who would benefit from working in a small group and supportive environment. The sessions run at the pace of the young people in each group.

Participants are accepted by a completed referral document and participant information form.

After the successful completion of the foundations courses the young person has the opportunity to get a place on our Big Breaks scheme, which entitles them to one year’s free place here at The Garage, on our class program.

Course breakdown

Each foundations course begins with the same focus on communication, listening, teamwork and trust. As the weeks progress each course splinters off into its specific art form, however, the themes above continue to be the focus of each course and throughout the 10 weeks. This is with the aim of improving confidence, self-esteem and raising aspirations.

As well as the skills listed above each foundations course looks imagination and creativity, as well as the following skills;

Creative (drama) foundations

  • Different ways of creating characters
  • How we show/share a range of emotions
  • Voice and speech
  • Physicality
  • Instinctive reactions
  • Creating short scenes/stories

Music Foundations

  • Rhythm/tempo
  • Vocals and melody
  • Basic song structure
  • Call and response
  • Using music to express emotions
  • Creating short music pieces in small groups

Dance foundations

  • Body awareness; warming up and cooling down
  • Dance technique
  • Improvisation
  • Choreography
  • Responding to different types of music
  • How to show emotion through movement.

These lists are not exhaustive but instead give a flavour of what each course contains, and we will happily provide more information about each course.

4 - BIG BREAKS

Big Breaks is a funding scheme designed to support disadvantaged or vulnerable young people to take part in a full year of our regular, weekly activities - our creative classes.

There are no set criteria and awards are offered at our discretion however we have found that young people who engage with us through the Creative Foundations course are better equipped to take thestep onto the Big Breaks Scheme. Therefore, initial referrals will be welcomed to Creative Foundations with a view to supporting these young people onto Big Breaks.

We do welcome all applications but please be aware that Big Breaks funded places are limited and should be used as an entry route for those young people to whom they would make the biggest impact.

Referrals for Creative Foundations leading on to Big Breaks Awards will be accepted on an ongoing basis for the next available course. Details regarding referrals are through Creative Foundations.

For young people unable to be granted a Big Breaks bursary, help could be available from these other local funders, who have shown great support for The Garage activities previously:

CREATIVE FOUNDATIONS

A number of organisations have enquired about purchasing the Creative Foundations course for an existing group. The benefits of buying in the programme for the whole group as opposed to making individual referrals include: increased group cohesion, less upheaval to an unfamiliar venue, possible ‘theming’ of certain aspects to meet the needs of the particular group.

We are able to take a limited number of bookings to run 10-week Creative Foundations outreach courses. Courses run for 1 hour per week and are suitable for groups of maximum 14 young people aged 7-12yrs or 13-18yrs.

ARTS AWARD

The Garage is experienced in working with partner organisations to deliver Arts Award. This recognized qualification is available at levels suitable from ages 7-25yrs and is a great way to accredit your group’s creative activities. We can design a programme to suit your needs, whether in school, at a youth group or other setting.

BESPOKE PROJECTS

The Garage works with lots of different partners to provide a range of arts activities for young people. For example schools, MAP (youth supporting organisation), Young Carers, Cub Scouts. These projects are tailored to the requirements of the group and are usually based around dance, drama or music. Please get in touch if you’d like to talk through your ideas

Sometimes we have funding available for work in particular areas, which means we can offer free or subsidised, depending on the size of the project. Currently we have funding for the Lakenham, Bowthorpe, Crome, and Mile Cross wards of Norwich as well as North Norfolk.
Arts Award can be delivered alongside the projects if desirable.

To discuss these opportunities and for a bespoke quote please contact Clara
