______

Joni Jordan began the Retreat by explaining that course outlines had been loaded onto Blackboard and sub-committees could print them to review or read them on-line. Joni explained that she would keep a master tracking list of courses being reviewed, and she asked committee members to keep her informed of their progress. All courses which needed to be corrected were to be saved on her flash drive. Concerns were raised about sending approved courses to Academic Senate when the courses to be discussed were not published on an agenda prior to the meeting. This led to a brief discussion that sub-committees should not be afraid to “red flag” courses if they have questions; Joni would then post those courses to Blackboard for further discussion.

The next discussion topic was the pilot template for the new course outline. Joni explained she was waiting for the student learning outcomes piece. A suggestion was made to have faculty come to the Curriculum Committee first to let them know what they plan to do.

299 Special Topic Courses Discussion: In the past COS could collect positive attendance for No Credit classes. However, the State has stopped that because of several abuses by other community colleges. Dr. Carlson explained that kinds of classes where students work on their class assignments in computer labs, art labs, music performances, etc. The proposed half-unit classes will not be part of an instructor’s load, and student will not be charged a fee for the half-unit this semester. It will not be mandatory for students to enroll in the classes; however, it is a way for COS to capture FTES that was lost because we cannot collect positive attendance. After considerable discussion, a recommendation was made to approve the courses as a pilot program to gather data and because students will not be charged for the extra half-unit. A motion was made to change all the 299 courses to 399, because they are designed to be No Credit classes and the courses will be offered this fall semester; motion seconded. It was noted that experimental courses are supposed to be good for a year rather than for one semester. A friendly amendment was made to change the courses to 399 and that they offered for one year and could explore using para-professionals. Dr. Carlson reported that Instructional Council has been discussing basic skills and the need to have a central plan in place where instructors in various divisions can send students who need extra help. If students’ knowledge base is inadequate for a class, then the proposed labs would be beneficial. After further discussion, the motion to approve the 399 Special Topics courses for one year was approved-M/S/C.

The following courses were discussed and approved at the two-day retreat:

  1. AG 115AD, (F84), Ag Enterprise Lab-Row Crops – 2 units – NEW
Justification: This course will be the practical application component of the Agricultural Enterprise Project class and certificate.

  2. AG 116AD, (F85), Ag Enterprise Lab-Forage Crops – 2 units – New
Justification: This course will be the practical application component of the Agricultural Enterprise Project class and certificate.
    Weekly Lab Hours=6
    Weekly Homework Hrs=2
    Total Hr/Wk=8
  3. AG 117AD, (F86), Agriculture Enterprise Project – 3 units – MODIFIED
Justification: After one year of teaching this course, we have found that due to the broad variation in crop cycles, students need to repeat the course. This will enable them to receive important instruction regarding federal, state and local Farm Program changes and how they affect different cropping programs. This valuable training will assist them in making decisions critical to their success as growers and hone their management skills.
    Lecture/Discuss Wkly Hrs.=3
    Weekly Lab Hours=1
    Weekly Homework Hrs.=6
    Total Hr/Wk=10
  1. AJ 110, (F56), Police Patrol Procedures – 3 units – MODIFIED

    Total Hr/Wk=9
  2. CHEM 1, (F60), General Chemistry – 5 units – MODIFED

    Lecture/Discuss Wkly Hrs=3
    Weekly Lab Hours=6
    Weekly Homework Hrs=10
    Total Hr/Wk=19
  3. CHLD 134, (F76), Child Abuse Prevention – 3 units – MODIFIED
Justification: Revised to align with new laws, and increase units from 2 to 3. Increased content since class was developed requires more time with students. Added as a certificate requirement for Human Services. The course title has been changed.
    Lecture/Discuss Wkly Hrs=3
    Weekly Homework Hrs=6
    Total Hr/Wk=9
  4. ECON 40, (F57), Principles of Microeconomics – 3 units – MODIFIED (formerly ECON 2)
Justification: This course is being renumbered to match the CSUF number so it is more logical as a prerequisite to ECON 50 (the earlier number is a prerequisite for the later number).
    Lecture/Discuss Wkly Hrs=3
    Weekly Homework Hrs=6
    Total Hr/Wk=9
  5. ECON 50, (F58), Principles of Macroeconomics – 3 units – MODIFIED (formerly ECON 1)
Justification: This course is adding a prerequisite of ECON 40 since much of the introductory points (first 2-3 weeks) are the same. Business students are required to take both courses (ECON 40 and ECON 50), so it is inappropriate to have the materials and first exam repeated – students get bored. The course is also being renumbered to math CSUF numbers and the order is logical (the prerequisite has the lower number).

Human Development/Counseling Courses: On the second day of the retreat a discussion was held on the proposed counseling course outlines. An objection was raised to changing Human Development courses to Counseling courses because it would limit who could teach these courses, and there was a question as to how that would raise FTES. Student success courses such as these have previously been taught by 14 people who teach is different faculty Faculty services Service areasAreas. Teresa Guadiana addressed this issue; she gave specific names of people who have taught the Human Development courses and most of them had degrees in cCounseling. She also named several other colleges who offer these courses in their counseling divisions. The rigor of the 3-unit class was also discussed. The cCounselors’ plan is to bring all of the Human Development courses into the Counseling counseling discipline. At this point, the question of cross listing the courses was raised with examples of other cross-listed courses given, such as FASH 12 and DRAM 12 which teaches costuming. The Drama Department has control of the course, but it may be taught in the other discipline. It was proposed that Counseling the Student Services division would “own” the classes, but someone else could teach it if their FSA fits into Human Development. Dr. Carlson added more information to the discussion. Instructional Council has been discussing college preparatory courses (aka Basic Skills), and one of the conversations is to eventually hire a full time Human Development instructor. It was stated that many divisions on campus want to do something to help students in their classes who are struggling with reading, math, etc. Considerable discussion continued on cross listing the courses, particularly cross listing as COUN/HDEV or COUN/IS. It was also noted that the proposal was to change HDEV 120 to COUN 101. A friendly amendment was made to the original motion to change COUN 101 to COUN 120, so the course would be cross-listed as COUN 120/HDEV 120 and the other course would be cross listed as COUN 100/HDEV 100; the friendly amendment was accepted. The motion to accept COUN 100/HDEV 100 was approved-M/S/C with one opposed. The motion to accept COUN 120/HDEV 120 was approved-M/S/C with one opposed.
