Songs of Worship – (2 songs)

Scripture – John 11:1-21 NRSV

“11 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill. 3 So the sisters sent a message to Jesus,[a] “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” 4 But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” 5 Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, 6 after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.

7 Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.” 8 The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now trying to stone you, and are you going there again?” 9 Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Those who walk during the day do not stumble, because they see the light of this world. 10 But those who walk at night stumble, because the light is not in them.” 11 After saying this, he told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to awaken him.” 12 The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be all right.” 13 Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death, but they thought that he was referring merely to sleep. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. 15 For your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles away, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

"Preaching in More Than One Language: Enchantment, Wisdom, Disruption”

Description: In a pluralistic culture, preachers should move beyond speaking with a single voice — in a single “language.” In these presentations, we will explore how preaching can speak in three biblical and theological “languages” that are especially needed in this cultural moment: the language of enchantment, the language of wisdom, and the language of disruption.

Scripture – Ephesians 3:14-21 NRSV – “Enough”

“14For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. 16I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, 17and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. 18I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 20Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, 21to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

Devotion – Rev. Donna Claycomb Sokol

Holy Communion & Prayer – Bishop Peggy Johnson

Great Thanksgiving - (More than Enough)

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

We adore you, O God, because your love for us is infinitely long,

wide, high, and deep,

surpassing everything anyone previously experienced.

This has been evident from the moment humanity began,

when we found ourselves surrounded exquisite beauty,

with sounds that invigorated our souls,

and the scent that opened our hearts to your divine presence.

This world which you have gifted us with,

was in perfect balance.

Everyone had enough.

There was no starvation.

There was no exploitation.

There was no violation.

There was only you, O God, and that was more than enough.

It is for this reason that we bow our knee before the Father,

after whom all the families in heaven above and on the earth below receive their names and pray:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might.

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

The blessed One who comes in your Name,

in your Name of love is Jesus.

He was sent so we might have the power to grasp

the width, length, height and depth of your love.

To those who thought that your love was for them only

Jesus showed them that your love was even more than they had ever imagined.

Jesus demonstrated a love that knew no boundaries,

a love that knew no limitations,

a love that was more than enough for everyone.

Jesus embraced love’s vulnerability:

touching the untouchable,

forgiving the unforgivable,

Including the excluded,

speaking the unspeakable.

When it would have been enough

to just sit back and enjoy the Passover from the seat of honor,

Jesus did more than enough:

Taking up the towel and basin

he knelt in humble service,

before his betrayer, his denier, and those who would desert him to his enemies.

Jesus invites us to follow this example.

When it would have been enough

to just go through the Passover ritual

Jesus did more than enough:

After blessing the bread of Passover,

he broke it saying “this is my body given for you.”

Jesus invites us to follow this example.

When it would have been enough

to just finish the Passover ritual

Jesus did more than enough:

After the supper he blessed the cup of Passover,

and shared it with everyone saying:

“Drink from this all of you, for this is my blood

poured out in testimony to God’s gracious promise of forgiveness to the whole world.”

Jesus invites us to follow this example.

After remembering all that Christ as done for us,

we kneel before the Father.

Every ethnic group in heaven or on earth recognizes that he has done more than enough for us.

In response we choose to embrace this holy mystery of Divine love as we declare our sacred faith:

Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again!

Unquenchable Spirit of God,

use this bread and wine to stir in us an insatiable hunger for the body and blood of Jesus, the righteousness of Christ.

Unquenchable Spirit of God,

use our lives to stir in the world an insatiable hunger for your love found in your church, the body and bride of Christ.

Unquenchable Spirit of God,

let us never settle for doing enough,

for being enough,

for loving enough,

for giving enough,

empower us instead to be like Christ

who is more than enough,

giving our all to make your gracious presence known in all our relationships.

It is for this reason that we bow our knee before the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, after whom all families in heaven above and on earth below receive their names.

Amen.

Now as those who have received more than enough from God, let us join Jesus in prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil

for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Scripture – Mark 6:1-13 NRSV

“6 He left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.2 On the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, “Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. 4 Then Jesus said to them, “Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown, and among their own kin, and in their own house.” 5 And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. 6 And he was amazed at their unbelief.

Then he went about among the villages teaching. 7 He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8 He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; 9 but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. 10 He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. 11 If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.” 12 So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent.13 They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.”
