Purpose / People credited with this unit standard are able to fill scuba diving cylinders to the standard set out in the Dangerous Goods (Class 2-Gases) Regulations 1980 and its amendments.

Explanatory notes
1This unit standard is a prerequisite to Unit 4406, Conduct visual inspections of scuba cylinders.
2Industry criteria refer to standards, procedures and codes of practice of authorised approval and registration authorities.
3Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 must be adhered to.
4All training providers assessing against any instruction diving unit standard must ensure that the training is conducted by a qualified instructor currently registered with one of the listed agencies: National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI), Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), Scuba Schools International (SSI), Confédération Mondiale des Activitiés Subaquatiques (CMAS), International Diving Educators Association (IDEA), or an equivalent, determined by Skills Active Aotearoa Limited, that meets the requirements of the World Recreational Scuba Training Council (WRSTC), the instructor must provide training in accordance with the standards and procedures of the respective training agency
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Use a high pressure compressor to fill cylinders used in self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (scuba) to manufacturer’s specifications.
Rangecompressor installation, air intake, drive unit, lubricants, filter materials, run-up procedures, guarding, isolation, over-pressure devices, safety to user and members of the public.
Evidence requirements
1.1The compressor is operated to Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.
1.2Explanation of operation and maintenance meets manufacturer’s specifications.
1.3Procedures for identifying complying and non-complying cylinders are demonstrated prior to filling.
1.4Maintenance of compressor meets manufacturer’s specifications.
1.5Air purity is tested regularly, and sampled and/or analysed air purity meet or exceed Ministry of Health and industry standards.
Outcome 2
Fill high pressure cylinder designed for use in self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (scuba).
Evidence requirements
2.1Handling and storage procedures for cylinders meet industry criteria.
2.2Inspection of the cylinder for compliance is demonstrated to industry criteria.
2.3Fill pressure is identified and control devices set accordingly.
2.4The cylinder being filled is restrained to prevent toppling or spinning.
2.5Valves are operated in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.
2.6Leak testing is performed to Dangerous Goods Regulations.
2.7Documentation complies with Dangerous Goods Regulations requirements.
Rangelogged record of compressor use (hour clock and/or number of fills), logged record of filter servicing periods and materials used.
