Phuket’s Largest Waterpark, Phuket Aquapark, to Open by the end of 2010

Phuket, the biggest island in Thailand will host a major waterpark project soon: Phuket Aquapark. Phuket Aquapark is located in one of the 3 main districts of the island, namely Kathu, located in the west of the island. Kathu is the district which covers the most touristical beach of Phuket: Patong Beach on the central western coast. As a result, Phuket Aquapark is expected to generate a considerable amount of visitors because of its proximity to the island’s major tourist destination: Patong. which is only about 10 minutes away. (6kms)

Phuket Aquapark is under construction and by mid 2010 the installation of the slides will begin ( all of the rides are produced and transported to Phuket with 40 containers) and Phuket Aquapark is scheduled to open in December 2010 providing a unique entertainment option for mainly tourists and the local population.

Phuket Aquapark is developed by a joint venture of Hungarian and Thai partnership. Thai and Hungarian investors are expecting the park to cost 25 million USD. The design, manufacturing and installation of the park are done by Polin Waterparks and Pool Systems, Turkey.

Mr. Szüch Gyula, the consultant of the project, from Eleven KFT Hungary, stated: “This project will surely be one of the most important projects of the region and one of the number one touristic amusement center of the region that promises maximum fun and a very diverse selection of attractions and waterslides with the latest technology.”
It is a chance that we were able to work with Eleven KFT with whom we used to work with so many projects in Europe before. Two of them are record holding projects being one of the largest waterpark and largest indoor waterpark projects of Europe, respectively Aquarena Waterpark 2000 and Aquaworld Indoor Waterpark, 2008. Working with Eleven KFT had been very advantageous. We were able to offer the newest slides, latest technologies which would make Phuket Aquapark as the best amongst its rivals.

The Phuket waterpark designer, Zeynep Canbaz, from Polin Waterparks Design Team: “We worked carefully with the unique characaterististics of the land to find the best optimum solution. The most important point of consideration in project design is to use the natural slope of the land and this land slope allowed a great location of the rides and the other attractions and from the very entrance to every part of the park, you can have an overall view of all the waterslides and the attractions. The slides with high towers are located on the left side of the entrance so that it enabled the best location visibility. The non-high attractions like wave pool, lazy river and the kids’ pool are located in the center. On the right hand side of the entrance, and this location have the best dominant view of all attractions, there are the restaurants, cafes and the locker and the change rooms. So this placement enables the visitors to see all over the park whenever they step into the park or when they leave the change rooms”

The park is located on an area of 65.000 sqm. The park features a gaggle of nearly every type of water slides imaginable that totals to 17, including rafting rides, inner tube rides, bowl rides, family raft ride, and a 6 lane mat racing ride, plus a lazy river, a wave pool, an interactive water play area, 7 splash pools, several activity pools, a major kids pool and lots of water attractions and slides for small children. Plus, there is a themed interactive water play structure located in the kids’ pool, which is called Thai Jungle Aquatower.

The 85 % of the waterslides in the park are produced with the latest innovation in waterslide manufacturing which is called Resin Transfer Molding. We call our RTM manufactured slides as Magic Shine. These slides have a perfectly superior and shiny finish on both sides. Resin transfer molding (RTM) is a low pressure closed molding process for moderate volume production quantities, filling the gap between the slow, contact molding processes and the faster, compression molding process, which requires higher tooling costs. Advantages over contact molding methods are a uniform thickness, two finished sides with a superior finish and low emissions. High quality parts are being produced by this method. Polin has been a pioneer in the advancement and application of the Light RTM process in waterslide manufacturing. Since 2006, we have converted to RTM on over 90% of our annual fiberglass production.
“We used translucent fiberglass components with both of our bowl rides in the bowl parts which promise a unique experience for the riders. Plus, this unique application adds great value to the general appearance of the rides.” said Yasemin Altan, the Planning Manager of Polin, the supplier of all slides and water attractions of Phuket Aquapark.

Another unique application of the rides is Natural Light Effects which is uniquely applied by Polin. NLE is applied in Space Boat, Twister, Space Hole, and Black Hole Slides of Phuket Aquapark. NLE system, a unique Natural Light System that only Polin offers in the World can create natural, beautiful effects and a truly unforgettable riding experience. Polin manufactures these types of slides with a very special technique that makes it possible for the natural daylights go through the slide and create a harmonious colorful effect inside the tunnel slide when combined with the effect of flow of water. These effects created naturally take different forms depending on the status of the daylight during the day. This is really a dynamic living experience rather than a static effect. When you look at the slide from outside, you can see the colorful stripes on the outer surface. Polin, being the first and the single waterslide manufacturer introducing "NLE" system to waterslide manufacturing has been applying this technique for long years with open mould production methods. Polin from 2009 onwards took this one step further by now applying this method to Magic Shine waterslides as well. The NLE components in Phuket are all magic shine waterslides with shiny finish on both sides.
Another important feature of Polin’s waterslide manufacturing which Polin calls Special Pattern Effects is also applied with the Twister slide of the park. The pattern that is applied is Black and White. The Wide Slide on the other hand has a rainbow pattern. Polin, being an innovator and an authority in waterslide manufacturing, offers special pattern effects by a special manufacturing technique of fiberglass coloration that requires distinctive knowledge and expertise, which is applied on the outer surface of the ride for an aesthetically superior outer look. It offers a more attractive look compared to a standard one color option

Volkan Ozmen, the Project Engineer stated that the most distinguishing Project based features of the park is the critical location of the pools, slides and the platforms in compatible with the land slope. This resulted in shorter steel columns. Therefore this allowed a more aesthetic architectural design in general. Plus, a unique themed Aquatower located in the kids pool is worth mentioning. Our play structures invite you to create your fun your way! Tipping buckets, slides, net climbs, water cannons and water all around, our play structures are surely the center of fun. The one in Phuket Aquatower is uniquely designed to be compatible with the theme of the park in general. “One other important thing that I want to mention the splash pools of our Uphill Flying Boats, Turbo Lance, Navigatour and Space Hole slides are directly connected to the Lazy River promising a non-stop transportation system through the park.”
We designed and engineered unique rides that will deliver fun, safety, function, comfort, innovation, capacity, entertainment, ease of operation and maintenance in the park. The majority of the rides in the park are out of our Inner Tube Rides and Extreme Rides Group. The total length of the rides in the park is over 1000 meters. The inner tube rides at the Phuket aquapark are expertly engineered to provide maximum fun and adrenaline. Our unique Magic Shine and Natural Light effect systems add great value to this series. There are 3 important rides that are in the extreme slides series which are Space Boat, Space Hole, Turbo lance and Tsunami. They are unique rides with their distinctive design and ride path. The extreme slides in Phuket contain different slide routes in one like vertical drops, classical ride paths, uphill ride route and centrifugal ride route. Water spray jets are commonly used and they provide a frictionless surface on most of these giant slides. Our extreme group mostly has a steep entry part on to the slide surface which provides riders with the thrill of "free falling". Polin being always innovative is continuously adding up new rides to this group.
