REPORT

The latest leg of the Equestrian Interschools League was hosted by Gorey Community School in Maurice Cousin’s Barnadown Equestrian Centre. Despite a bitterly cold day this was a well supported event and enjoyed by all. The Individuals especially enjoyed the jumping action over the Derby course.

The course builder John Doyle built two tricky tracks for the Open event, which resulted in three teams qualifying on zero faults to jump off for the first three places. Both teams representing Colaiste Bhride Carnew and the St Gerard’s bray Navy team jumped off for top slot. The challenging jump off course, demanded quick thinking with several tight turns and accurate riding. Fastest of the three were the Colaiste Bhride representatives to claim first and second place. Colaiste Bhride Carnew Blue Team riders, Laura Kinsella riding Sioux Skermish, Julie Mullins on Bo Spark, Joanna Barnes riding Jodi Snow and Laura Hadden riding Phoebe claimed first when Julie Mullins and Laura Haddon left all the poles up ahead of Colaiste Bhride Carnew Yellow team, represented by Andrew Brennan (Lappy Lucy) Thomas Furlong (Rockville Shannon) Aoife Kavanagh (Slieve Beagh) and Aaron Brennan (Red Arrow) Although the second team had the fastest time a pole on the ground deprived them of the win. St. Gerard’s Navy team riders, Kirsti Connole riding The Fugitive, Amy Byrne riding Dudley, Bethan Pereira on Tobasan and Sarah Bloor on Penure Princess had to be content with third place.

Five teams finished on just four faults and jumped off for the remaining places. Fastest of these was the other St. Gerard's team- Laura Finnerty, Shona Callan, Sophie Geraghty and Mark Finnerty, with Newbridge College Black riders Maedhbh Brassill, Lauren Heffernan, Luke Heffernan Megan Flanagan taking fifth and

Abbey Community College in sixth. Abbey was represented by Rachel Elliott Fiona Fox Shannon Maguire Lauren Elliott. Host school

Gorey Community School Red and Gaelcholaiste Cheatharlach ended up on seventh and eight respectively and will gain league points since both Carnew and St Gerards filled the top four slots.

Judge Michael O’Connor also officiated over the novice event. Out of the seven teams only two managed to leave all the poles up to jump off for the top slot. Fastest of these and claiming the win was the Dominican Wicklow team of Rebecca Mahony riding Spotacular, Erin McConnell riding Molly, Jessica Mahonyon Cora and Emma Jane Leggitt, on Billy ahead of Newbridge College representatives Ava Flanagan on Cedar’s morning Mist, Lisa Sexton riding Glencouth Lad and Orla Harrington riding Night Light. Hosts Gorey Community School having finished the qualifying rounds on four faults claimed third. Gorey was represented by Louise Dixon on Princess, Sarah Brohan riding Flo, Cameron Reynolds on Mr.P and Rebecca Stacy riding Sorrell.

Both Derby individual classes were judged by Bill Burrell. The open class was won by league leader Mark Finnerty on Too Posh representing St Gerard’s with Ciara Browne in second and Denise Coade in third. Novice honours were claimed by Stephen Mitten of Kilmuckridge ahead of Lisa Sexton and Tara Doyle.

Michael Finn principal of Gorey Community school and organiser Claire Kinsella presented the prizes.
