Scouting Is Fun

Welcome one and all to the 1st Gosport Scout Group AGM Evening.

The idea of our evening is :-

1.To give you the opportunity to see what your son/daughter has been doing at Beavers / Cubs / Scouts over the last year.

2. For the Group to hold its Annual General Meeting and to give you the opportunity to ask questions about how the group runs.

3. It enables us the opportunity to inform you of our vision for the Group’s future and let you know what ideas we have to make Scouting in 1st Gosport even better and more fun than last year.

We hope you all have a good evening and enjoy a burger after.

GSL Comments

I hope tonight you will hear what I feel about our group. That they have settled in our new location, and also the new badges. We are starting to feel not so new and strange here, more, comfortably familiar with it all.

It has been great seeing all the sections out and about more and each of our leadership teams bringing new ideas and games that have seen all our members make some great achievements and we are planning even more for next year.

To keep on achieving this we get great help in all the preparations from our leaders, assistant leaders and the exec committee from buying materials, planning, running equipment around, helping at camps and the Christmas fair.

Did everybody enjoy the Christmas fair ?

Back to how we achieve what we do. Our team also pitch in by just being an extra adult body when outside, which is great. This gives the kids a chance to do more than we can inside and the adult gets to join in the fun as well. Just look at all those happy faces coming up behind me. We helped make those moments. But seriously, all of us in this room are a part of this busy world we live in and sometimes it’s just not possible to make it here. My self and the extended team have stepped in to keep the right level of adults that keep the planned nights activities going. This is what being a part of our team is, helping each other and the group, achieving great things. As you will hear now, from each section.

My thanks to all our team for doing a great job.

Treasurer’s Report

We finished the year with a profit of £2299.95. This is excellent and shows that we are all benefitting from being at GADSAD.

Our main fundraising event of the year was the Christmas Fair which made £833.88 –our best amount to date. We also received £300 from HMS Sultan and have sold off some of our old equipment like chairs and strip lights. We also received £790.95 in gift aid.

We are always looking for new fundraising ideas, so if you have any suggestions please let us know.

The financial spreadsheets will be placed on our website so they can be looked over at your leisure. If anyone has any questions after looking at the spreadsheets, please let me know and I will answer them for you.

Beaver Report 2016-2017

We have had a really busy year at Beavers. Have increased our beaver numbers from 17 to 23 and now have 3 leaders, a young leader and a helper. 4 of our beavers over the last year have achieved their chief scout bronze (the highest award in beavers) and 4 have moved up to cubs.

We have had visits from the RNLI, Guide Dog Association and Gosport & Fareham food bank.

We have actively attended district events like the five a side football and sports day where we came 1st in both events, Super Beaver, District camp, sponsored hike and the Xmas party.

The beavers have also attended the Remembrance Day service, Christingle service and St. Georges Day Parade.

Activities through the year have included marshmallow catapults, tie dying, potato heads, bird feeders and a litter pick as well as lots, lots more.

Badges that have been completed are the experiment, emergency first aid stage 1, International, Cyclist, Communicator, Creative, Disability Awareness as well as working towards all their challenge badges.

Future events that we are looking forward to are picnic in the park, County Camp, Marwell and Paultons.

A big thank you to all the leaders that make this happen – Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore, Roo and Rabbit.

Cub reort
So for those of you that have been here a while youll know that my name is Malcolm or Akela run the cub group with the help of Claire, Jackie and Mel. We've had roughly between 20 and 25 cubs over the past year and still have a large waiting list.
This year we are concentrating on completing our challenge badges so that the cubs move up to scouts with their Cheif Scout silver. Apologies in advance but this does mean that there maybe some small amounts of "work to do at home" but we will try and keep this to a minimum where possible as having three kids of my own I'm fully aware how busy home life can be.
Highlight of this year, apart from District camp which was amazing, was making our rockets. We make coke bottles into rockets by using vinegar and bicarb of soda and plugging the cap with a cork. Problem was it was so windy that I had to hold the bottles as they shot off. Covered in vinegar and bicarb i was soaked and stank, but to see the faces on the cubs made it all worth it. And thats what being part of scouting is about.
As mentioned before, district camp was great fun, thankfully no freezing temperatures this year! Plenty of activites kept the cubs busy AND for the first time in memory I think everyone was asleep before midnight (I'm on about the kids!).
Thanks for bringing your kids along to Cubs - we have a great group and I know that myself and the other leaders & helpers really enjoy seeing the cubs learn, and grow in the couple of years that we have them with us.

Scout Report 2017

The scouts have had a good year.

We have 18 scouts on the books and we have seen many of our scouts go to explorers over the last year.

We have taken part in a range of district activities including; Chess competition, Cooking competition 3rd place, Sedan chair -1st place, Rifle shooting competition, District camp, Leadership Skill Camp and Camp Skills one (Pre-Elles camp), Raft race where we came 2 nd ! And the Canoe regatta. This year the scouts came 2 ndin the yearly Wilson Greenway trophy which is presented at the St Georges Day Parade and they achieved this by turning up to the district events and competitions. We have recently taken part in the Elles Camping Competition. In August we are hoping to run a summer camp (dates TBC). In September we have Water fun day and in October we are hoping to attend the County Winter Camp and the District Light weight hike competition. Came 3rd last year

The scouts have gained many badges over the past year and they will continue to do so. As a section we have had a few scouts gain there Chief Scout’s Award, which is the highest badge you can gain in the scout section and our aim is to ensure everyone gets this before moving on to explorers. These badges are gained through work at home as well as work and activities at scouts on a Wednesday night.

On a Wednesday night we have completed many activities including; Cooking competition prep, Indoor pioneering, Wide Games, Backwoods cooking, Rafting, Camp Gadgets, First Aid, Rifle shooting, Archery, Scouting skills, Map skills and compass work and much more.

We have had a good year as 1 st Gosport Scouts and we hope to continue this throughout the next year by continuing to complete badge work and attend all district activities.

Yours in Scouting
