Colonel Lawrence Schmidt Appointed Utah Army National Guard Chief of Staff

DRAPER, Utah — Colonel Lawrence A. Schmidt has been appointed Utah Army National Guard Chief of Staff, effective Nov. 8, 2007.

A Draper resident, Schmidt is a native of St. George, Utah. He graduated from Dixie High School and enlisted in the Utah National Guard at the age of 17 as a cannon crewman with Second Battalion, 222nd Field Artillery.

Schmidt completed Officer Candidate School in 1981 and graduated from Southern Utah University in Cedar City in 1988. During his early military career he served as a detachment commander, battery commander, executive officer, fire-support officer, and operations officer.

Schmidt transferred to the Michigan National Guard from 1988-91 and served with the 1-119th Field Artillery while he attended the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Mich.

After law school Schmidt returned to St. George where he was employed by M. Kent Christopherson & Associates and Boyack & Boyack before setting up his own law practice, specializing in contract, divorce and townhome association cases.

He resumed his service in the Utah National Guard in 1991 and was appointed State Staff Judge Advocate in 1995, where he has served for the last 12 years.

Schmidt’s new duties as chief of staff include serving as the chief advisor and principal assistant to the adjutant general of the Utah National Guard. He will be responsible for directing, supervising, training, and coordinating the staff and assisting the adjutant general in the deployment and coordination of programs, policies and plans affecting the 6,500 members of the Utah National Guard.

Schmidt’s parents are Del Schmidt, of San Mateo, Calif., and Jeannie Reeves of St. George, Utah.
