1 Hebrews 1

DASV: Digital American Standard Version
DASV: Hebrews 1

1Long ago Godspoke atmany times and in various ways to our forefathers by the prophets.

2In these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the world.

3He is the radiance of God's glory and the exactrepresentation of his essence, and he sustainseverything by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

4 having become as much better than the angels as the name that he inherited is more excellent than theirs.

5 For to which of the angels did God ever say,

"You are my Son,

today I have I have fathered you"?

and again,

"I will be his Father,

and he will be my Son"?

6 And again, when he brought his firstborn into the world, he said,

"Let all the angels of God worship him."

7 And regarding the angels he says,

"Who makes his angels spirits,

and his servants a flame of fire."

8But about the Son he says,

"Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;

and the scepter of justice is the scepter of your kingdom.

9You have loved righteousness,

and hated lawlessness;

therefore God, your God, has anointed you

overyourcompanions with the oil of gladness."

10 And,

"You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth,

and the heavens are the works of your hands.

11They will perish, but you remain,

they will all get old like a garment;

12like a cloakyou will roll them up,

like a garment they will be changed.

But you are the same,

and your years will not end."

13 But about which of the angels did God ever say,

"Sit at my right hand,

until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet"?

14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to servein behalf of those who will inherit salvation?

1 Hebrews 2

DASV: Hebrews 2
1 Therefore we must pay closer attention to the things we have heard, so we do not drift away from them.

2 For if the message spoken through angels proved certain, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty;

3 how will we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation? It was first announced through the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard him.

4 God also confirmed their testimony by signs, wonders and various miracles, along with gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his own will.

5 For he did not subject the world to come, about which we are speaking,to angels.

6 But one has testified somewhere, saying,

"What is man, that you are mindful of him,

or the son of man, that you should care for him?

7You made him a little lower than the angels;

you crowned him with glory and honor,

8you put everything in subjection under his feet."

For when he put everything under his control, he left nothing outside his control. But currently we do not see everythingunder his control.

9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for a little while, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

10 For it is appropriate for him, for whom are all things and through whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the author of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

11 For both he who makes holy and they who are made holy are all from the same Father, for that reason he is not ashamed to call them brothers,

12 saying,

"I will declare your name to my brothers,

in the midst of the congregation will I sing your praise."

13 And again,

"I will put my trust in him."

And again,

"Here I am, and the children whom God has given me."

14 Since then the children share in flesh and blood, he tooshared in the same; so that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil,

15 and free those who were enslaved all their livesbythe fear of death.

16 For surelyhe did not help the angels, but he helped the descendants of Abraham.

17Therefore it was necessary for him in everything to be made like his brothers, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make anatonement for the sins of the people.

18Since he himself has suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.

1 Hebrews 3

DASV: Hebrews 3
1Therefore, holy brothers, partnersin a heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Jesus.

2He was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses was also in all God's house.

3 For he deserves more glory than Moses, just asthe one who builds the house deserves more honor than the house itself.

4 For every house is built by someone; but God is the one who built everything.

5Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant, to testify of those things that would be spoken later.

6But Christ,is faithful as a son over God's house; whose house we are, if we hold on tight to our courage and the confidence of our hope.

7Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says,
"Today, if you will hear his voice,

8do not harden your hearts,

as in the rebellion,

in the day of the trial in the wilderness,

9where your fathers tested and tried me,

and saw my works for forty years.

10Therefore I was provoked by this generation,
and said, 'Theirhearts always wander,

but they have not known my ways.'

11So I swore in my wrath,

'They will not enter into my rest.'"

12 Take care, brothers, that none of you has an evil and unbelieving heart, that turns away from the living God.

13But exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called "Today,"so thatnone of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

14For we have become partnerswith Christ, if we hold on tightto the beginning of our confidence to the end.

15As it says,

"Today if youwill hear his voice,

do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion."

16 For who were those who heard and rebelled? Was it not all those who came out of Egypt through Moses' leadership?

17 And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

18To whom did he swear that they would not enter into his rest, but to those who were disobedient?

19So we see that they were not able to enter in because of unbelief.

1 Hebrews 4

DASV: Hebrews 4
1Therefore whilethe promise of entering into his rest still remains, let us fear that anyone of you mayseem to have failed to reach it.

2 For we had good news preached to us, just as they did. But the messagethey heardwas of no benefit to them, because they did not connectby faith with those wholistened.

3 For we who have believed can enter into that rest; even as he has said,

"As I swore in my wrath,

'They will not enter into my rest,'"

although his works were finished from the foundation of the world.

4 For he has spoken somewhere about the seventh day in this way:"And God rested on the seventh day from all his works."

5And again in the passage cited above, "They will not enter into my rest."

6Therefore it remainsfor some to enter it, yet those to whom the good newswas preached previously failed to enter because of disobedience.

7He again set up a certain day, "Today," saying through David some time later just as quoted before,

"Today, if you will hear his voice,

do not harden your hearts."

8 For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken later about another day.

9 There remains, therefore, a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

10 For the one who enters into his rest has himself also rested from his works, just as God did from his.

11 Let us, therefore, endeavor to enter into that rest, that no one fall by following that same example of disobedience.

12 For the word of God is living, and effective, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, andbetween the joints and marrow, and is able to judge between the thoughts and motives of the heart.

13Now there is no creature that is hiddenfrom his sight, but all things are naked and exposed before the eyes of him before whom we must give an account.

14Since then we have such a great high priest, who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold on tight to our confession.

15 For we do not have a high priest whois unable to sympathize with ourweaknesses; but one who has been tempted in all points like we are, and yet without sin.

16 Let us therefore confidently approach the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace when we need help.

1 Hebrews 5

DASV: Hebrews 5
1 For every high priest is taken from among the people and appointed to represent people in things pertaining to God, sothat he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.

2He is able todeal gently with the ignorant and erring, since he himself also is prone to weakness.

3This is the reason he is required to offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as for the people.

4No one takes this honor on himself, but only when he is called by God, just as Aaron was.

5 So too Christ did not glorify himself to be made a high priest, but was glorified by himwho said to him,

"You are my Son,

this day have I fathered you."

6 as he also said in another place,
"You are a priest forever

after the order of Melchizedek."

7In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to him who was able to save him from death, and was heard because of his godly devotion.

8Although he was a Son, yet he learned obedience by the things which he suffered.

9Having been made perfect, he became to all those who obey him the source of eternal salvation.

10So he was designated by God as high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

11Concerning whom we have many things to say, and it is difficult to explain, since you have become hard of hearing.

12 For by this time you ought to be teachers, yet you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, and not solid food.

13 For everyone wholives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness; for he is still an infant.

14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their senses trained to discern between good and evil.

1 Hebrews 6

DASV: Hebrews 6
1 Therefore let us leave the basicteachings of Christ, and press on to maturity; not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith in God,

2 teaching about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.

3 And we will do this, if God permits.

4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened and tasted of the heavenly gift, and become partakers of the Holy Spirit,

5 and tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the age to come,

6 and then fall away, to bring them back again to repentance; since they are crucifyingfor themselves the Son of God all over again, and hold him up to public shame.

7 For the ground, drinking in the rain that fallsfrequently on it, and brings forth crops useful for thosewho farmed it, receivesa blessing from God.

8But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and ready for a curse, and it ends up being burned.

9 But, beloved, we are convinced of better things about you, things related to salvation, even though we speak this way.

10For God is not unjust to forget your work and the love which you have shownfor his name, in your service to the saints as you still serve them.

11 And we desire each one of you to show the same diligence to the fulfillment of your hope to the end,

12so that you may not becomesluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he could swear by no one greater, he swore by himself,

14 saying, "Surely I will greatly bless you and multiply you."

15 And so after having patiently waited, Abraham obtained the promise.

16 For people swear by someone who is the greater than themselves and all disputes are brought to an end by an oath of confirmation.

17In the same way God, being determined to show more clearly to the heirs of the promise that his purpose was unchangeable, confirmed it by an oath,

18so that by two unchangeable things, since it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to him for refuge mighthave strong encouragement to hold on tight to the hope set before us.

19We have this sure and steadfast hope as an anchor of the soul, that entersthe place behind the sanctuary curtain,

20 whereJesus as a forerunner entered for us, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

1 Hebrews 7

DASV: Hebrews 7
1 For this Melchizedek was king of Salem, priest of God Most High, the one who met Abraham as he returned from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him.

2To him, Abraham also apportioned a tenth part of all the plunder. His name first means, "king of righteousness," and then also he is called"king of Salem,"that is "king of peace."

3He is without recorded father, mother, and genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but is like the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.

4 Now consider how great this man was to whom Abraham, the patriarch, gave a tenth of his plunder.

5 And those who are the sons of Levi who receive the priest's office have a commandment according to the law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers, although they too are the descendants of Abraham.

6But this man who does not have their ancestryreceived tithes from Abraham, and has blessed him who hadreceived the promises.

7 But it is beyond question that the less is blessed by the superior.

8In one casethe tithes are received by men who die, but in the other, by one who is attested to be alive.

9It could even be said that Levi, who receives tithes, paid tithesthrough Abraham,

10 for he was still in his father's loins when Melchizedek met him.

11 Now if perfection was possible through the levitical priesthood, for under that priesthood the people had received the law, what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one designated as after the order of Aaron?

12 For when the priesthood changes, there is of necessity a change in the law too.

13 For the one of whom these things are said belongs to another tribe, from which no one hasever served at the altar.

14 For it is obvious that our Lord came from Judah, concerning which tribe Moses said nothing regarding priests.

15It is even more obvious, if another priest arises after the likeness of Melchizedek,

16 who has been made a priest, not according to the law of physical descent, but by the power of an indestructible life.

17For it is testified about him,
"You are a priest forever,

after the order of Melchizedek."

18 For on the one hand, there is a setting aside of the foregoing commandment because it was weakand useless--

19for the law never made anything perfect. On the other hand, a better hope was introducedthrough which we draw near to God.

20This was affirmed by an oath; for others who became priests previously became priests without taking an oath.

21But Jesus became a priest with an oath by the one who said of him,
"The Lord swore and will not change his mind:

'You are a priest forever.'"

22This makes Jesus the guarantee of a better covenant.

23There are many who have been made priests, because death prevented them from continuing as priests.

24But he, because he lives forever, has his priesthood permanently.

25Therefore he is able to save forever those who draw near to God through him, since he livesforever to make intercession for them.

26 For such a high priest is appropriate for us, one who is holy, blameless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted higher than the heavens.

27He does not need to daily offer up sacrifices, like other high priests, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people; for he did this once for all, when he offered up himself.

28 For the law appoints men high priests who have weakness; but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.
