CPR IX

June 1-3, 2007

Course: CPR VIII will be the ninth row over the 115-mile course from Corvallis to Portland. The row will start at the Oregon State boathouse in Corvallis at approximately 5:30 AM on Saturday, June 2 and will finish around noon on Sunday, June 3 at the Oregon Rowing Unlimited dock just below the Sellwood Bridge. Saturday night will be spent at Champoeg Park, approximately 85 miles from Corvallis.

Eligibility: Participation in the 2007 event will require (a) USRA individual membership, (b) an entry fee of $125, which includes a Willamette Rowing Club temporary membership if the entry is accepted, (c) a signed waiver, and (d) acceptance of the entry by the Committee.

Equipment: New World Rowing, LOC for CPR IX, is not responsible for providing boats or oars for participants, nor for guaranteeing the safety of the course. CPR IX is rowed on a free flowing river rife with obstacles both natural and man-made. If damage to equipment occurs, participants are responsible for providing repair materials and expertise. New World Rowing will have emergency repair materials available, and volunteers willing to provide assistance, but no warranties are provided regarding the quality or availability of damage repair.

Mandatory Boat Inspection: All competitors must have their shells fully rigged and ready for inspection at the Oregon State University boathouse by 4:00PM on Friday June 1, 2007. Inspections will be performed by USRowing officials ONLY between 3:00PM and 5:00PM. Be fully prepared for this inspection.

Friday Dinner: Dinner will be from 5:30 to 7:30 at a great Chinese Resturant (same as last year). At 7:45 pm there will be a mandatory meeting at the Holiday Inn Express in Corvallis to review important announcements and safety issues.

Rowing Protocol: Crews will start boating at 5:00 AM on Saturday in the order prescribed by the officials. Each crew must wait for authorization from the officials before leaving the dock. The first checkpoint will be at Independence, Oregon (35 miles) at a park on the west bank. Crews must arrive at Independence not later than 10:30 and depart not later than 11:00. The second checkpoint will be at the Wheatland Ferry (25 miles) on the east bank. Crews must arrive at Wheatland Ferry not later than 2:00 and depart not later than 2:30. Crews who do not meet these cutoff times will be ordered to leave the course and place their boats on the trailer for transport to Champoeg Park. On Sunday, crews will start boating at 5:30 AM, and after launching must wait for authorization from the officials before heading downriver.
NOTE: All boats must receive clearance from the beachmaster at Independence and Wheatland Ferry before launching. Launching will be regulated in order to minimize the distance between safety launches during the event.

Hazards: Numerous and uncharted. See Willamette River Guide. Best general advice is to be careful and stay in the main channel. Be particularly careful when launching and landing.

Launches: There will be safety launches for regatta officials.

Timing: The clock for each boat on each day will start at the assigned starting time for that boat, regardless of whether the boat is prepared to start. In other words, please do not hold up the parade. Times will be total elapsed times including all rest stops EXCEPT that the first 45 minutes taken at Independence and Wheatland will be excluded. The 45-minute window will NOT extend the departure deadlines under Rowing Protocol above. If launching is delayed by regatta officials, the delay will not be charged to the participant.

On Sunday, boats will launch in their given order, and will hold position on the river until started by the regatta officials. Once started, boats will be on the clock until they reach the entrance to the Willamette Falls Locks. Time spent waiting to enter the locks, and time in the locks, will not count as elapsed time.

Timing starts when boats pass the gates of the last chamber and enter the lower Willamette. The finish line is between the green navigation buoy at Oaks Park and the Oaks Park boat dock.

It is traditional, though not mandatory, to finish the event with a power twenty.

Food and Water: Food, water and sport drink will be available at the checkpoints on Saturday, at the start on Sunday, and at the finish on Sunday. Dinner will be provided at Champoeg Park Saturday night. Each crew is responsible for arranging for whatever additional food and water they need.

Saturday Night: We have reserved a camping area at Champoeg Park for Saturday night. Most rowers will camp out, but it is not required. CPR IX will not supply any camping equipment.

Transport: CPR IX is not responsible for the transport of boats for the regatta. For safety purposes, there will be a trailer that follows the row in order to pick up any crews forced to drop out, and the trailer may be available to transport some boats from Oaks Park to Corvallis on Friday. Each morning at the start, each rower may deposit baggage for transport to the day’s finish. Large, clearly marked name tags are recommended. Items that are needed at rest stops should carried in the boat or have special transport arranged for.

Required Items: Before launching, each crew must indicate that they have adequate water, a first aid kit, sunscreen, sunglasses, an airhorn or whistle, cell phone, duct tape, space blanket, a bailing device and adequate clothing. Each boat must have bowball and heel-ties.

Repair Materials: Each boat must supply its own repair materials. CPR IX is not responsible for providing repair materials. It is recommended that every boat bring a spare fin. Repair materials that you do not want to carry in the boat with you may be placed in one of the launches (space available) or the trailer.

Lodging in Corvallis: There are a number of motels close to the OSU boathouse; however, the Holiday Inn Express is our official hotel this year. They have blocked a number of rooms and have given CPR participants a reduced room rate. Call and say you are part of the Corvallis to Portland Row (CPR).
