A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE THE FOREST LAKE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHOIR OF COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA AND ITS DIRECTOR, MS. ANGELA POWERS, ON THEIR EXUBERANT AND OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE SINGING TWO SONGS, “WE ARE GOOD SANDLAPPERS” AND “CAROLINA SUNSHINE” AT THE INAUGURAL CEREMONY FOR GOVERNOR JIM HODGES ON JANUARY 13, 1999.

Whereas, music, children, and the theme of improving public education shared the spotlight with Governor Jim Hodges at his inauguration as South Carolina’s one hundred and fourteenth Governor on January 13, 1999; and

Whereas, the participation of the Forest Lake Elementary School Choir exemplified all three of these important elements of the ceremony; and

Whereas, the Forest Lake Elementary School Choir was chosen from many schools to participate in this program and to be a part of this important moment in the history of our State; and

Whereas, the choir, made up of ninety fourth and fifth graders, practiced and rehearsed diligently for four weeks under the coaching and teaching of their choir director, Angela Powers; and

Whereas, the children spread smiles through the entire audience when they exuberantly performed two songs, “We are Good Sandlappers” and “Carolina Sunshine”, by singing, swaying, and clapping the rhythm and music of these upbeat melodies; and

Whereas, one of the parents, Walt Theus, accompanied the choir on the electronic keyboard and another teacher, Faye Halford, assisted Ms. Powers; and

Whereas, let us also note that Representative Joel Lourie attended this school over twentyfive years ago, and his daughter, Rachel, who is a student there now, continues the family tradition. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives recognize and congratulate the Forest Lake Elementary School Choir of Columbia, South Carolina and its director, Ms. Angela Powers, on their exuberant and outstanding performance singing two songs, “We are Good Sandlappers” and “Carolina Sunshine” at the Inaugural Ceremony for Governor Jim Hodges on January 13, 1999.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the principal of Forest Lake Elementary School.
