/ Bedniak / Babushka owns s tiny plot of land. She has one pig and some chickens. Her husband was killed during the Great War leaving her to raise her eight children. Babushka works her small area of land herself. As she has no animals, her eldest two children pull the yoke of the plough whilst she steers the blade. She sows her seeds by hand. Three of her children died of starvation last winter. Her eldest daughter, Nikita went to Petrograd to work in a factory and they have lost touch as the postal and communications systems have collapsed. Babushka remains very poor and has to work the land for 14 hours each day to make ends meet. She cannot read or write. / Bhavniski Gararaovich

/ Niohciak / Lukyan is a village blacksmith. He owns three large plots of land, a meadow and a pond in the village as well as the village smithy. As Lukyan spends most of his time in the smithy he employs three men to farm his land. He grows wheat and grazes animals on grassland meadow he also owns. He makes horseshoes and tools for other villagers which he barters for milk, eggs, vegetables and vodka. He believes in the old ways of farming and was once a proud soldier in the Tsar’s army. He had three sons, Serge, Alexi and Gregori. Sergei was killed during the Great War ;Alexi died fighting for the Red Army in 1918 and he is unsure of the whereabouts of his youngest son Gregori, although he think he may be fighting in the Civil War. / Lukyan Snowski

/ Kulak / Sergei owns twelve hectares of land in the village. His wife is dead and his only son Nikolai is a war hero and fought for the White armies against the Bolsheviks. He helps Sergei farm the land. Sergei spending his evenings spinning yarn to make clothes which he sells at the local market along with vegetables from the farm. He buys food with his profits. He owns ten cows, many ducks and chickens and three horses. He sells eggs milk and butter to the poor of the village. Private selling of goods was outlawed by the Bolsheviks under their policy of war Communism but Sergei carries on selling. His house is a hut made from brick and mud. / Padoun / Nikita works in the Putilov Armaments factory in Petrograd. She has worked there for 7 years having moved from her family home in the village. Nikita is highly regarded by the factory managers. She was happy when the Tsar was overthrown and not unhappy when Kerensky and the Provisional Government were overthrown by Lenin and the Bolsheviks as she believed Lenin’s’ slogans of ‘Peace Bread and land’ and ‘All power to the Soviets.’ She joined the Factory school and has learned to read and write. / Praobuk / Gregori had been called up in 1914 to fight for the Tsars army against the Germans. In 1918 he found himself taken into the Bolshevik Red Army to fight the White armies who wished to overthrow Bolshevism. Gregori has been part of the Red Army squads going into village to requisition grain from the peasants. Along with his fellow Red Army soldiers, Gregori is well fed and commands respect. He goes to Political classes, run by Lev, the Bolshevik Political Commissar, to learn about the revolution and to learn how to read and write. He thinks of Lenin and Trotsky as great heroes and would do anything for the revolution. / Danielovski Callejaviski

/ Moparski / Andrei has been a sailor with the Kronstadt Battalion for 8 years. He fought for the Bolsheviks in 1917 and along with his fellow Kronstadt sailors was key in the Bolsheviks winning power. Since then the Kronstadt sailors have been vital in the Bolsheviks winning the Russian Civil War against their enemies the White Army. However, over the past few months Andrei and his fellow Kronstadt sailors have become disillusioned with the Revolution and with the Bolsheviks. The suffering of the peasants, the famine the long-working hours and poor working conditions have created a situation no better than when the Tsar or the provisional Government were in power. / Zoeovich Tangovski

/ Bolsheviski / Lev is a fanatical Bolshevik and supporter of Lenin. He was in Petrograd in April 1917 when Lenin returned and issued the April Theses. During the summer of 1917 Lev worked tirelessly to bring about the Bolshevik revolution. He now works as a Political Commissar for the party making sure party orders are followed. He believes that the needs of the Bolshevik revolution are most important and that any suffering caused by the revolution will be short-term and is necessary for the Bolshevik revolution to succeed in Russia. / Marufski Faquirbhai
