Demonstrate knowledge of safe working practices in the apparel or textile industry

Purpose People credited with unit standard are able to recognise statutory rights and responsibilities, identify hazards and procedures for dealing with hazards in the workplace and, demonstrate safe working practices in apparel and textile manufacturing.

This unit standard is intended for people working in the apparel and textile manufacturing industries. Evidence may be demonstrated on-the-job and/or in learning or training environments.

2 Workplace requirements are the expectations of the management in the candidate’s workplace regarding the performance required. These expectations must be explained and made available to the candidate.

Element 1

Demonstrate knowledge of the rights and responsibilities of employees and employers under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.

Performance criteria

1.1 Rights and responsibilities of employees are identified and described in terms of the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.

Element 2

Identify hazards and procedures for dealing with hazards in apparel and textile manufacturing.

Performance criteria

2.1 Hazards are identified in relation to the workplace.

Range hazards in the candidate’s assigned work area, and other hazards that the candidate may encounter in the workplace; hazards may include equipment, machinery, electrical, chemical, fire, gas, fumes, compressed air, noise, product.

2.2 Personal hazards are identified in relation to the workplace.

Range personal hazards relevant to the candidate’s workplace which may include but are not limited to – clothing, hair, footwear, jewellery, lifting, handling, occupational overuse syndrome.

2.3 Procedures are identified in relation to avoidance of accidents in accordance with workplace requirements.

Range procedures in the candidate’s assigned work area, and others the candidate may be expected to follow in the workplace; procedures may cover but are not limited to – equipment, machinery, electrical, chemical, fire, gas, fumes, compressed air, protective clothing, storage and work area maintenance.

2.4 Procedures in the event of accident, fire and emergencies are explained in accordance with workplace requirements.

2.5 Procedures and principles of relevant acts and regulations relating to safety, health and welfare in the workplace are identified.

Element 3

Demonstrate safe working practices in apparel and textile manufacturing.

Range working practices that relate to the candidate’s assigned duties.

Performance criteria

3.1 Safe working practices in the use of machinery are demonstrated as specified in manufacturer’s instructions and according to workplace requirements.

Range devices relevant to the candidate’s workplace which may include but are not limited to – fences, guards, safety devices, operating and isolation techniques.

3.2 Safe working practices are demonstrated which ensure personal safety.

Range practices relevant to the candidate’s workplace which may include but are not limited to – protective clothing, personal equipment, protective barriers.

3.3 Hazardous materials are stored and carried as specified by the manufacturer.

Range hazardous materials relevant to the candidate’s workplace which may include but are not limited to – chemicals, gas, compressed air, flammable materials, lubricants, cleaning fluids, waste materials.

3.4 Warning signs for hazards are displayed in accordance with workplace requirements.

3.5 Work areas are kept clean and free of debris.

Range work areas relevant to the candidate’s workplace which may include but are not limited to – walkways, floors, workbenches, platforms, conveyors.

3.6 Equipment is used and maintained as specified by the manufacturer or workplace requirements.

Range equipment relevant to the candidate’s workplace which may include but is not limited to – electrical, mechanical, fluid, radiation.

3.7 Workplace practices comply with Acts, Regulations, and By-laws relating to health, welfare and safety.

Please note

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
