In this unit standard it is required that disciplines of tikanga are applied and consultation with tangata whenua occurs in order to validate assessment activities.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Gather and prepare materials for the making of Māori customary fish hooks and lures.

RangeMāori historical and contemporary materials are required for two hooks and two lures.

Performance criteria

1.1Materials are gathered in a manner that meets tikanga requirements.

1.2The preparation of materials meets hook and lure specifications and tikanga requirements.

Element 2

Make, use, and repair hooks and lures for fishing activity using Māori customary methods.

Rangea minimum of two hooks and two lures.

Performance criteria

2.1Hooks and lures are constructed according to tikanga requirements, style and type, and species sought.

2.2Hooks and lures are used according to tikanga and species requirements, and fishing conditions.

2.3Repairs to hooks and lures meet the tikanga requirements of hook and lure specifications.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
