Purpose / This unit standard is part of a tourism Māori suite which may be used to contribute towards achieving the graduate outcomes of the New Zealand Certificate in Tourism Māori (Level 3) [Ref:2337].

Explanatory notes
1This unit standard is designed to assist the learner to identify the uniqueness of Māori culture. It is thought that Māori language expression will enable the learner to gain an understanding of the interconnectedness of Te Ao Māori. By understanding these aspects, the learner will be able to explain these differences for manuhiri and highlight the significance for tourism.
2Assessment
The assessment context for this unit standard is limited to local rohe or takiwā. Where local rohe are also occupied by a number of iwi or hapū, the tangata whenua or mana whenua view will take precedence. Other iwi or hapū views should be encouraged in order to enrich and enhance understanding of key Māori concepts and practices.
Assessment may be presented in a number of ways which may include but are not limited to – haka, oral presentations, pakiwaitara, pūrākau, visual presentations, waiata, whakaari, written presentations.
This unit standard may be assessed against in the workplace or in a training provider situation.
3Definition
Tourism Māori is an indigenous cultural experience of interaction and engagement with manuhiri.

1.1Te reo Māori greetings and farewells are listed.
Rangegreetings and farewells include – singular, dual, plural;
evidence of three greetings and three farewells is required.
1.2Te reo Māori greetings and farewells for formal and informal situations are used appropriately and pronounced correctly.
Rangegreetings and farewells include – singular, dual, plural;
evidence of two formal and two informal greetings is required; and
evidence of two formal and two informal farewells is required.
