Title / Select and record routes as a road transport operator

Purpose / This unit standard is for the operators of goods, passenger, and vehicle recovery vehicles which use other than scheduled or stipulated routes. The term 'operator' includes drivers, despatchers, and supervisors.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: establish destination and possible routes; select a route; and record route details.

Definition

Evidence requirements
1.1Destination established is consistent with company and/or client instructions.
1.2Possible routes are identified and are consistent with available information.
Rangeavailable information may include but is not limited to – major roads, restrictions to vehicle types, traffic lights, major intersections, heavy vehicle by-passes, road conditions, motorway on and off ramps, one way streets, rail crossings, overpasses, underpasses.

Select a route.
Evidence requirements
2.1Selected route is consistent with cost-effective use of the vehicle for the conditions.
Rangeconditions include but are not limited to – distance, load, traffic pattern and density, road standard, weather, time of day, season.
2.2Selected route is consistent with efficient operation of the vehicle.
2.3Selected route is consistent with the load being carried, and availability of rest stops en route where necessary.

Record route details.

3.1Recorded route details are clear and concise and provide information in accordance with organisational requirements.
