PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT

We are a comprehensive educational service provider that focuses on the whole child. We fully support the common core standards and pride our efforts in preparing students for a successful career/college readiness skill set for their future success. We acknowledge and promote student responsibility and accountability for his/her education. We also recognize that students learn at various rates through various modalities. We believe that a student’s success is dependent on an appropriate attitude, serious commitment, and the right assistance. By utilizing Long Island Tutorial Services, students have an opportunity to demonstrate high academic performance.

Mission

We have four basic missions: Each Child is Special, Reinforcement, Organization & Study, and Support District Initiatives

·  Each Child is Special: Our tutors/specialists work with the student’s classroom teacher in order to fully engage them in a seamless transition of their educational requirements. By focusing on each child’s ability and learning style we use multiple techniques to foster optimal sustained learning. As we follow the core curriculum we personalize instruction and work with the strengths that each child holds. We will never give up on your child;

·  Reinforcement: To enhance the students understanding of a given subject, while improving the student's ability to successfully complete a course. Our tutors/specialists reinforce key concepts the student might have forgotten and guide them through their homework;

·  Organization & Study Skills: Our tutors teach effective note taking and study techniques that will help your student enhance and improve their academic performance, and are trained to help their students stay organized; and

·  Support District Initiatives: To provide professional supportive services and effective communication, beyond expectations, that will complement the coordinated close instruction between classroom teachers, district administration, and parents.

Teacher Handbook (page 2)

Procedures

Districts send us a request for tutoring needs as they arise. We have a limited amount to time to accept the case. In order to meet the district’s needs in an efficient manner, the following procedures have been set up:

1.  Sal or Alesia will send the information pertaining to the student to the tutor in each subject area.

2.  The teacher/tutor should respond ASAP to the email/phone call regarding acceptance of denial of the client. We will give you until 12 pm the next day to respond before passing it along to another tutor/teacher. Please keep in mind, the quicker we provide the student with a schedule the quicker we can help that student get back on track.

3.  You MUST accept the client and inform us before seeing the student. We must contact the district and inform them who will be tutoring.

4.  You have 24 hours to contact the parent/guardian and teacher if one is assigned.

5.  Once you have accepted the student, we will send you a student packet with the pertinent information, signature sheets, and record sheets.

6.  Timesheets with signatures and student journals should be filled out completely and clearly. Districts do require and read student progress. Please keep them neat and clear.

7.  Upon completion of the month or hours of sessions permitted by the district all paperwork is the responsibility of the tutor/teacher to submit to Sal before the 3rd of the next month. This can be mailed (173 N. Main Street, Suite 213, Sayville, NY 11782) or handed to him personally. Checks are sent out on or about the 21st of each month.

8.  If you are having difficulty reaching the family after 3 days please contact us and inform us.

9.  It is each tutor/teacher to set up a tutoring schedule with the student’s parent/guardian. Collaborate to determine an appropriate schedule.

10.  ** Remember if the session is happening in the client’s home an adult of the age 21 or older MUST be present. Tutoring, however, can take place at a public place, (library, coffee shop, or a health related facility) if the situation warrants.

11.  Be aware of the other tutor/teacher’s schedules. Any overlap of sessions will not be accepted and may result in neither teacher being paid.

12.  Tutors/teachers must be considerate of the parent and student’s busy schedules by notifying them at least 2 hours or more in advance of any cancellations.

Providing Services

You are the professional representing LI Tutorial Services, Inc. We expect that you will dress, act, and prepare work as necessary as a professional teacher.

1.  Once you have accepted the student, it is your responsibility to contact the district and make arrangements for picking up and dropping off work. It is up to the tutor to schedule pick up and drop off times. Tutors are not reimbursed for this time.

2.  If the school is not providing work for you, it is your responsibility to provide/prepare work appropriate for the student, their course and grade. Refer to www.nysed.gov .

3.  Each student is unique. The district determines the amount of hours the district is allowing for the student per subject. This information will be provided for you. It is your responsibility to notify us if you are unable to continue tutoring, the student has completed their hours or a problem with student attendance arises.

4.  Students are seen on an individual basis and will not be seen in groups unless previously approved by Sal and the District.

5.  Many districts DO NOT permit weekend or holiday instruction. Please ask us if you are considering this. You may NOT get paid if tutoring is done on an unapproved day.

6.  Tutoring should be provided during reasonable times of the day.

7.  Any tutor who is seeking to drop a case must immediately inform LI Tutorial Services ASAP.

8.  Student no-shows, cancellations, and last minute cancellations must be called/emailed in to LI Tutorial. After 3 no-shows districts are informed and it will be determined by the district if we should continue services.

Midterms, Finals and State Exams –Final Grades

Students will be required to complete all exams as if they were in school. Time restraints mandated by the district or NYSED must be maintained. We will provide you with a copy of the testing schedule however; it is your responsibility to contact the district to clarify district testing.

Students are NOT permitted to be grouped together during testing.

Tutors are to provide quarterly grades for their students. Session grades are expected to be completed and returned to our office at the end of each month.

Qualifications

Aside from a valid New York State Certification in your respective area of expertise, you must also know that, the New York State Education Department requires that all teachers/tutors must be fingerprinted for the purpose of verifying background information. Each district requires proof.

Below is the website for those that need to be fingerprinted and is your responsibility to have the process done in a timely fashion. You will NOT be permitted to tutor until you have sent LI Tutorial a copy of the NYSED fingerprinting clearance form. Below are the procedures set forth by NYSED and they must be followed for your fingerprinting process clearance.

Fingerprinting Process from Start to Finish (online submission)

http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/ospra/fpprocess.html

If you are not fingerprinted from your present school district you can:

1.  Create your NYTeach account at: http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/teach/

2.  Follow the prompts

3.  Pay the $91.50 fee-online (Please know that fees may change at the discretion of NYSED)

4.  Call SCOPE at 631-881-9646 to set up fingerprinting appointment.

5.  Show up to your appointment with a check (cost could be $30 or $35 depending on your situation. Please know that fees may change at the discretion of SCOPE)

These costs are not established by L.I. Tutorial Services but are established by the organizations that fingerprint. For clarification we suggest you go to the respective organizations website or call the above number at SCOPE.

Upon your clearance you can log on to your established teach account and provide us with a copy of your clearance. Again, your teaching certifications must be valid.
