Purpose / This is an introductory unit standard intended for people wishing to gain a general overview of the structure of the aviation industry.
People credited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate knowledge of civil aviation law, and aviation procedures and systems.

2Definitions
CAA refers to the Civil Aviation Authority of NewZealand.
Safety procedures refer to a set of procedures and systems within an operational group to ensure consistency and safety during a process.
ICAO refers to the International Civil Aviation Organisation.
3Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes the Civil Aviation Act 1990.

1.2The CAA is described in terms of its purpose, function structure and key accountabilities.
1.3The Civil Aviation Act 1990 is described in terms of its structure.

Demonstrate knowledge of aviation procedures and systems.
Performance criteria
2.1Safety procedures in aviation are described in terms of their purpose and application by specific industry personnel.
Rangeair traffic controllers, pilots, flight attendants, maintenance personnel, airport ground staff.
2.2Control systems which ensure aviation safety are described in terms of their purpose and application.
Rangeapprovals and licensing; training; quality control and assurance; aircraft maintenance programmes; incident reporting and followup; personnel selection and qualification requirements.
