Transition Arrangements

This qualification has been reviewed and replaced by the New Zealand Certificate in Equine Coaching (Level 4) with strands in Dressage, Eventing, and Jumping [Ref: 2373].

The last date for entry into programmes leading towards the replaced qualification is 31 December 2016, from which point no new enrolments will be accepted.After 31 December 2016 all new trainees will be enrolled in programmes leading to the replacement qualification.

Purpose

This qualification is for equestrian coaches who have experience in coaching and wish to coach horse and rider combinations towards competition within performance disciplines.

People will have the skills to plan, implement, and evaluate development coaching lessons for riders on horses; develop a series of coaching sessions; prepare a horse for specific event; prepare horse and rider combinations for competition; apply psychological skills to equine sports performance; analyse equine movement to enhance performance; prepare a horse for a specific event; apply psychological skills to equine sports performance; formulate rations for horses; formulate rations for horses; fit and remove studs; age horses by teeth and examine for sharp edges; travel and care for horses in short term accommodation; recognise, manage, and treat problems of performance in consultation with the veterinarian; and apply first aid.

People will also have knowledge of coaching; coaching people with medical conditions; conditioning and feeding horses; skeletal and muscular development of the horse in relation to conformation; and the shoeing process.

The Dressage Strand recognises the skills to ride movements for ESNZ Elementary Dressage Test 3.3; and teach a variety of horses to lunge.

The Showjumping Strand recognises the skills required for showjumping and training a horse to jump.

The Eventing Strand recognises the skills required dressage, and riding showjumping and cross country courses.

This qualification builds on the National Certificate in Equine (Preliminary Coaching) (Level3) [Ref: 1603], although it is not a requirement for entry.

This qualification replaced the National Certificate in Equine (Grade 1 Coaching) (Level 4) [Ref: 0656].

Previous version of the qualification

This qualification replaced the National Certificate in Equine (Grade 1 Coaching) (Level 4) [Ref: 0656].

There are substantial differences between the new and replaced qualifications.

  • The replacement qualification includes Dressage, Showjumping, and Eventing strands.
  • Standards 6591, 6592, 6613, 6618, 6620, and 6624 were included in the compulsory section of the replacement qualification.
  • Standards 6400-6402 were replaced by standards 26551 and 26552.
  • Standards 1661, 1663, 6592, 6615, 8495, 9705, 11097, 24751, 24752, 25004, 25442, and 26499 were added to the compulsory section of the replacement qualification.
  • Standards 1627 and 1662 from the compulsory section were included in the Dressage strand.
  • Standards 6621, 6593, and 6594 from the Elective were included in the strands of the replacement qualification.
  • Standard 6600 was added to the Showjumping strand.
  • Standards 497, 1277, 1625, 1652, 1653, 1654, 1655, 3501, 6581, 6590, 6595, 6616, 6617, 6619, 15623, 22768, and 22771 were not included in the replacement qualification.

This qualification contains standards that replace earlier standards. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards – see table below.

People currently enrolled in programmes leading to the award of qualification Ref:0656, may either complete that qualification, or transfer to the replacement qualification. However, as there are substantial differences between the new and replaced qualification, it is recommended that people complete their existing programme. The start date for programmes or courses for the new qualification is at registration. The last date for entry to programmes or courses for the replaced qualification is 31 December 2011. The last date for assessments to take place for the replaced qualification is 31 December 2014.

Quality Management Systems
Providers and Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess by a recognised Quality Assurance Body before they can register credits from assessment against standards. Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
