Independence Day!
“No taxation without representation!” No one likes to be a slave! The war of Independence between Britain and the 13 colonies began with the Battle of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775 and lasted until the signing of the Treaty of Paris on September 3, 1783. Eight long years of war in which approximately 25,000 died. About 6800 of those died in battle while another 17,000 died from disease brought on by terrible conditions endured while prisoners of war.
Can you imagine the joy and celebration that occurred when the battle was won & independence gained? As we celebrate this year, remember the battle fought, the price paid, and resulting joy that must have been felt!
But John tells us of a slavery much worse than the colonists were fighting against: “Jesus replied, I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin” (Jn. 8:34). This slavery has eternal consequences! The Jews thought that, as Abraham’s descendants, they had never been slaves of anyone (v. 33). Jesus pointed out that the only way we can be freed from slavery to sin is through Jesus! “So, if the Son sets you free, you will free indeed! (Jn. 8: 36)” Now that’s the freedom we must have! Heaven requires it!
As joyous as the early settlers must have been at their great victory, we should “shout for joy” at the knowledge that, through Jesus we are free from Satan’s slavery! Let us all make sure we have taken advantage of Jesus’ continuous cleansing (1 Jn. 1:7) by turning to Him in repentance (Lk 13:3), acknowledging Christ to the world (Mt 10:32-33), and putting him on in baptism for remission of our sins (Acts 2:38)! Then, let us live in joyous service to Jesus (Phil. 3: 13-14)!
“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (Jn. 8: 31-32)
