Status: 2 - Initial Attack Fire Crew Members, and 1 – Crew Member Trainee

Type 1 Initial Attack Crew Member

The Crew Member is a member of an IA Crew whose work requires the proper use, care, and maintenance of standard wildland firefighting equipment, and the use of standard techniques while safely engaging in wildland fire suppression activities. The function of the Crew Member is to perform Initial Attack operations and, when required, hot fireline suppression activities on sustained action wildland fire operations. Other duties may include conducting fuel hazard reduction projects or other assigned duties on wildland fires as required, and the general maintenance and upkeep of the Fire Base and grounds.

Directly responsible to the Type 1 Initial Attack Leader.

Certification Requirements

1.Has successfully completed the Type 1 Initial Attack Member course.

2.Experience on a total of five (5) Initial Attack or Sustained Action wildfires, or, 150 hours of fireline duty.

3.Minimum Grade 10 completion, with skills to read, write and comprehend wildfire knowledge and has the ability to understand written instructions.

4.Demonstrates an aptitude for, and a good attitude towards, the fire suppression job and supervisors.

5.Has valid certificate(s) or willing to obtain in:

5.1Transportation of Dangerous Goods - Ground Mode;

5.2WHIMIS; and

5.3Valid Standard First Aid Certificate,

6.Valid Driver’s Licence – class 5

7.Must meet and maintain the Yukon WFM WFX- Fitness Standards.

8. Valid Passport required for fires outside of Canada.

9.Certified as medically fit for forest fire fighting duties.

Type 1 Initial Attack Crew Member Trainee

An IA Crew Member Trainee is an individual who meets current fitness standards for Crew Members but who has not yet completed all mandatory training for the Crew Member position.

Directly responsible to the Type 1 Initial Attack Leader.

Candidates for Initial Attack Crew Member Trainee should:

1.be comfortable living and working in a field camp environment;

2.experience or training in forest fire fighting operations; and/or

successful completion of the Emergency Fire Fighting S-100 course.

Certification Requirements

1.Ability to work effectively and safely in a team.

2.Has passed the Yukon Initial Attack Fitness Test and maintain that ability through the season.

3.Certified as medically fit for forest fire fighting duties.

4.Has a valid certificate in Standard First Aid Ticket, or willing to obtain.

5.Experience operating and maintaining equipment and tools, i.e. power saws, pumps, etc.

6.Has a Canada Radio Operator’s License - Land/Air;

7.Has a valid class 5 motor vehicle license; and

8.Ability to gain certification as an Initial Attack Crew Member as per the current Yukon Wildland Fire Incident Certification Manual or Training program.
