Purpose / This unit standard is designed for people requiring technical understanding of the practical aspects of asphalt paving construction.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of asphalt mix options, pavement pretreatment, and preparation requirements; demonstrate knowledge of asphalt paving construction requirements; and explain organisation of asphalt paving operations to meet specifications and operational efficiency.

2 Assessment against this unit standard may be based on evidence from workplace and/or provider contexts.

3 Definition

Company procedures refers to all documented policies, procedures and methodologies of the candidate’s employer at the time of training including but not limited to those relating to health, safety, environment, quality and operations.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of asphalt mix options, pavement pretreatment, and preparation requirements.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Types of asphalt mixes and their compositions are identified and their application is described in accordance with NZTA M10, NZTA P11, and contract specifications.

Range mixes – structural base, dense (including stone mastic asphalt), open-graded porous, patching, modified binder.

1.2 Pavement pretreatments are described in terms of pretreatment work necessary prior to resurfacing operations.

Range pretreatment work – water proofing, flushing prevention, deflection treatment;

surfaces – unbound basecourse, stabilised basecourse, new chipseal, slurry, asphalt, cement concrete, cracked surface, deformed surface.

1.3 Surface preparation requirements are described in accordance with NZTA P9, NZTA P11, NZTA P18P, and contract specifications.

Range tack coat, blinding course, membrane seal, scrub coat, levelling course, wearing course.

Outcome 2

Demonstrate knowledge of asphalt paving construction requirements.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Asphalt paving construction design requirements are identified in accordance with contract specifications and company procedures.

Range thickness, finished levels, density, permeability, shape, texture.

2.2 Site measurements are described in terms of meeting construction design.

Range mix temperature, thickness, finished levels, density, permeability, shape, texture.

2.3 Requirements for sampling and testing are described in accordance with contract specifications and company procedures.

2.4 Requirements for recording work are described in accordance with contract specifications and company quality assurance procedures.

Outcome 3

Explain organisation of asphalt paving operations to meet specifications and operational efficiency.

Evidence requirements

3.1 Operations are explained in accordance with NZTA P9, NZTA P11, and contract specifications.

Range laying by – paving machine, grader, hand.

3.2 Details of plant used to load, transport, and lay asphalt, and justifies the sequence for different operations are explained.

Range operations – place and screed by hand, lay with paving machine.

3.3 Methods for minimising segregation of the asphalt mixes during operations are explained.

Range operations – plant loadout, transfer to paving machine, paving machine feed, handwork.

3.4 Differences between the requirements of different jobs in terms of achieving specified compaction are explained.

Range requirements include but are not limited to – plant, sequence of operations;

jobs – maintenance patching, driveway, footpath, surface levelling, sports surface, road, motorway, airport runway, container terminal, heavy industrial site.
