CONSTRUCTION
Who Is The Course Aimed At
Students who wish to follow a vocational study option in Construction as part of their KS4 programme of study. Students should be committed to travelling to the college each week.
Entry Requirements
Satisfactory referral by school and genuine interest on the part of the student. Students must be prepared to work outside in all weathers and to get dirty.
Application Process
Students should inform their school of their wish to be considered for this programme and may then be referred by their schools using the LBE Clearing House system referral form. Students will be required to complete an induction session in the Summer term of Yr 9
Qualification & Content
BCO level 1 Construction – This is a practical work-related course for those interested in acquiring skills in Construction. The course enables students to begin to develop practical skills in painting and decorating, carpentry and brickwork. Not all sessions will be practical. There is also a strong emphasis on health and safety and team working. The course takes place one afternoon a week at Southgate College and runs for two years.
Assessment
Assessment will be by demonstration of practical skills and the building of a portfolio of evidence. There is no exam in this subject.
Materials & Additional Costs
None – Personal protective clothing and tools and materials will be supplied by the college and will be included in the fee paid by the referring school.
Next Steps
Students who successfully complete year 10 progress to the second year of the programme to complete the qualification. They may then choose to apply to study the subject full time at the college with a view to a career in the Construction industry.
