Title / Determine permeability and flame retardancy of materials used in industrial textile fabrication

Purpose / This unit standard is for people who work in the industrial textile fabrication industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: determine whether permeability of a selected fabric is suitable for product requirement; and determine whether flame retardancy of selected fabric is suitable for product requirement.

Explanatory notes

2Definition

Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer specifications, product quality specifications, and legislative requirements.

Outcome 1

Determine whether permeability of a selected fabric is suitable for product requirement.

Evidence requirements

1.1Permeability of fabric is described in accordance with the manufacturer specifications.

Rangeair, water, vapour.

1.2Tests for fabric permeability are described in accordance with the manufacturer specifications.

Rangewaterhead, rate of air flow.

1.3Permeability test is observed on selected fabric and result recorded and interpreted in accordance with company requirements.

1.4Permeability of selected fabric is checked against minimum company requirements for the product.

Outcome 2

Determine whether flame retardancy of selected fabric is suitable for product requirement.

Evidence requirements

2.1Reasons for flame retardancy treatment of fabric are described in accordance with legislative and company requirements.

Rangesafety, environment, legislative requirement.

2.2Method of treating fabric to increase flame retardancy is described in accordance with the manufacturer specifications.

Rangepost-production treatment.

2.3Testing for flame retardancy rating of fabric is described in accordance with the manufacturer specifications.

Rangeignition speed, heat evolved, char length.

2.4Testing for flame retardancy is observed on selected fabric, and the results recorded and interpreted in accordance with company requirements.

2.5Flame retardancy of selected fabric is checked against minimum company requirements for the product in accordance with the manufacturer specifications.

2.6Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.
