2000 – Current: Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Director of Student Development and University Housing

University of South Carolina

Responsibilities: Serve on the senior leadership team for the Division of Student and Alumni Services. Provide vision, leadership and direction to the various departments in the Student Development area which includes the student judicial programs, student health center, counseling center, disability services, academic skills, national student exchange, campus wellness, and sexual health and violence prevention. Additionally, serve as director for university housing and as campus catalyst for the Carolinian Creed. Serve on the Associate and Assistant Dean’s Council. Responsible for budgets of approximately 30 million dollars and a staff of more than 200 permanent employees plus 400 temporary and student employees.

1994 – present: Clinical Faculty

Responsibilities: Teach graduate courses in student development, higher education, and student affairs administration. Develop sites and supervise practicum and internship seminars. Serve on thesis and dissertation committees. Collaborate with faculty on admissions, curriculum, evaluation and strategic planning for all programs of study in student affairs and higher education administration.

1997 – 2000: Director of University Housing and Judicial Programs

University of South Carolina

Responsibilities: Serve on the senior leadership team for the Division of Student and Alumni Services. In addition to directing the department of university housing (see below), responsible for the office of student judicial affairs. Develop strategic direction and initiatives for campus-wide discipline and academic integrity processes. Provide consultation to faculty in cases involving academic dishonesty and classroom disruption. Ensure appropriate procedures for campus discipline processes. Promote character development, responsible citizenship, and campus civility among university constituents. Supervise the director of judicial affairs. In addition, serve as Student and Alumni Services coordinator for the Carolinian Creed and senior management development. Also, serve as member of the Associate and Assistant Academic Dean’s Council.

1992 – 1997: Director of Housing and Residential Services

University of South Carolina

Responsibilities: Provide leadership for a comprehensive campus housing department with facilities for approximately 7,000 students. Develop and manage an auxiliary budget in excess of $18 million and supervise a staff of 130 full-time and over 400 part-time staff. Give vision and direction for the facility management, academic programs, residence life, administrative processes, and business functions of the department. Develop residential learning communities in consultation with the Provost and various academic departments, including a residential college, an honors residence, residential learning communities for first year engineering and pre-med students, along with an array of academic support services and classroom instruction opportunities within the residential environment. Develop design criteria and lead the project teams for a multi-phased $100+ million renewal of campus housing, including new construction and renovation of existing halls.

1989 – 1992: Assistant Director of University Housing

University of Georgia

Responsibilities: Provided leadership and direction for a 3,000 student housing area with an annual budget of $3.5 million. Directly responsible for facility management, budgets, personnel, and residence education. Scope of supervision included 50 full-time staff, 15 graduate students, and 150 undergraduate student staff. Served on the senior management team for the department of university housing that provided residence halls and apartments for 7,000 students in 18 residence halls and 545 apartments.

1990 – 1992: Adjunct Assistant Professor

University of Georgia

Responsibilities: Taught graduate courses in student development, higher education, and student affairs administration. Supervised practicum and internship students. Served as member of student’s thesis and dissertation committees. Evaluated students’ comprehensive written and oral examinations.

1983 – 1989: Assistant Director of Housing

University of Florida

Responsibilities: Directed the family housing department, including the administrative operations and residence education program for 1086 apartments housing single graduate/professional students and students with families (2600 residents of which 42% were international students). Supervised three full-time professionals and 20 part-time student staff. Coordinated the development of database management system, application/assignment system, brochures and handbooks, facility management, and strategic planning processes.

1979-1983: Resident Director/Residence Life Coordinator

Appalachian State University

Responsibilities: Served for two years as resident director for a freshman hall while completing a graduate program in Student Development. On graduation, promoted to Residence Life Coordinator, providing leadership for the staff and students in four residence halls housing 1100 undergraduates. Supervised three graduate hall directors and forty resident advisors. Coordinated facility management, developed policies, and designed residence education opportunities focusing on personal growth and community responsibility.

1971 – 1979: Realtor – Broker

Wall, Realtors – Eden, North Carolina

Responsibilities: Beginning as a salesman in 1971, Director of Marketing and Sales Manager in 1973, and Vice President in 1976, directed the operations of a fifteen person real estate office with sales exceeding $10 million. Recruited, selected, and trained salespeople. Managed budget and accounting procedures and directed advertising and public relations. Served as the elected President of the Eden Board of Realtors during which the first multiple listing service for Rockingham County was developed and initiated.

· Current projects in development and writing phase include a monograph on Residential Colleges and Learning Communities commissioned by the National Resource Center for First Year Students and Students in Transition. Expected publication date is January 2005.
