12th NATIONAL OVER 60’s CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS,

Canberra, ACT

18th to 23rd NOVEMBER 2017

Dear Regional Coordinators and Members,

On behalf of Veterans Cricket NSW please find following, information regarding the 12thNational Championships to be held in Canberra, ACT from Saturday18th- Thursday 23rd November, 2017.

Please be aware that the Over 70’s Championship is now being held separately and this year will be in Adelaide, 2 weeks prior to the Over 60’s.

Veterans Cricket NSW has an excellent record in National Over 60’s Championships. After reaching 2 finals last year but coming home from Perth ‘empty handed’, we want to reassert NSW as the ‘premier state’ in 2017. This is a great opportunity for you to enjoy a week of competitive cricket in your age group so start planning now.

We have nominated 5 teams, expecting to field one team in each of Divisions 1 to 3 with 2 in Division 4 if numbers permit. We do not, however, plan to ‘borrow’ players as required last year to fill our Div 4 teams so the final number of teams will be influenced by nominating numbers. Members should be aware that:

  • to be eligible you must, as a minimum age requirement, be turning 60 in 2017.
  • there will be a selection process and not all nominating cricketers will necessarily be selected.
  • selected teams will be announced at the NSW state carnival dinner at Penrith.

Championship program:

  • Saturday Nov 18Meet and Greet at the Dickson Tradies Club.
  • Sunday Nov 19Day 1 Pool Matches
  • Monday Nov20Day 2 Pool Matches
  • Tuesday Nov 21Rest Day
  • Wednesday Nov 22Day 3 Pool Matches
  • Thursday Nov23Final Round andChampionship Dinner at the Southern Cross Club, Phillip.

Nominations

Nominations are not being called for until later than previous championships in the hope that players will be more aware of their commitments and there will be fewer withdrawals once nominations have been received and teams selected. Withdrawals have caused significant disruption to the selection process for the last 2 carnivals.

Nominations will be called in June and forwarded to Selection Coordinator, Doug Trigg.

Championship Costs

The carnival levy is expected to be in the vicinity of $350.Player registration plus function costs are still to be notified by ACT organisers. It willinclude all cricket costs such as ground and umpires fees, lunches and function costs for the week. For those who will be accompanied by spouses there will be an accompanying persons cost to attend the Meet & Greet plus Championship Dinner.

A deposit of 50% of the levy will be required when amount communicated at the nomination stage. In the event that you subsequently are not selected, the deposit will be refunded, however, this may not apply if withdrawing after teams are finalised.

Accommodation

Group accommodation is NOT being organised as for past championships. Thus it will be INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS responsibility to organise their own accommodation. To assist with this we are giving some alternatives.

A.C.T organisers have suggested there are many suitable accommodation options in close proximity to both the Dickson Tradies Club and the Southern Cross Club where the championship functions are being held. These are listed below. The majority of these properties are located in the Canberra Central area or in the Inner Northern Suburbs.

Your Championship Liaison persons (Neville and Doug) have also investigated motels offering a wider variety of affordably priced accommodation. The Best Western Central Motel in Queanbeyan (NSW) has a range of room options including apartments which can accommodate 3 or 4 per apartment.Refer to the attached document for details.

If you are definite in your plan to nominate for the 2017 Championship you might consider booking accommodation before nominating.

Uniform

Representatives are required to wear NSWVCA uniform gear both on the field and to games and functions. The NSWVCA is in the process of seeking new tenders for uniform supply. Details of items and prices will be communicated in a future bulletin.

Championship Preparation

Further to the earlier comment about ‘reasserting our superiority’ at the 2017 nationals, imperative will be maintaining a fitness program in the ‘off season’ and being ‘100% ready’ for 4 days of competitive cricket in 5 days. Of interest is that Queensland now have a winter Veterans Cricket competition, playing every fortnight across the ‘off-season’. They are ‘raising the bar’ and we want to aim higher. Maybe Regional Coordinators can start planning now to get training programs and game schedules ready for next pre-season. Not only do we want some national championship medals but also the Cooper Finlay Cup returned later in the season.

Expressions of interest 2017 Over 60 National Championships

Players planning to nominate for the 2017 Nationals should return the attached EOI by April 30 to

NSWVCA has requested that Regional Coordinators collect and collate EOI’s, then forward to Liaison Person and Selection Coordinator
