Title / Make and repair a boat cockpit canopy and side curtains

Purpose / This unit standard is for people who work in the industrial textile fabrication industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare to make; make; prepare to repair; and repair, a boat cockpit canopy and side curtains.

Explanatory notes

1Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.

2Definition

Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, sail and manufacturer design specifications, product quality specifications, and legislative requirements.

Outcome 1

Prepare to make a boat cockpit canopy and side curtains.

Evidence requirements

1.1Materials that make up the canopy and curtains are identified in accordance with designer and manufacturer specifications.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – fabric, frame, windows, bows, webbings or pads, hood, side linings, fastenings.

1.2Tools, material, and equipment that enable the canopy to be made are identified and used in accordance with manufacturer and designer specifications.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – screwdrivers, clip remover, sewing machine, needles, drawing materials, thread, shears, tape, straight edge, square, punches, stapling pliers, drill, doming machines, tack hammer, hidem binding and tips, skewers, markers, pattern, fabric, window materials, spring clips, bulldog clips, tacks, staple gun, padding, padding material, zips, stitch sealant, fasteners, adhesives.

1.3Customer requirements and job specifications are identified and verified in accordance with company requirements.

1.4A template is made and all measurements are in accordance with job and/or designer specifications.

1.5Tools and equipment are cleaned and put away in their place in accordance with company requirements.

1.6Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.

Outcome 2

Make a boat cockpit canopy and side curtains.

Evidence requirements

2.1Fabric is identified and marked out in accordance with designer specifications, and all markings are legible, tolerances are allowed for, and there are no defects in the material.

2.2Material is cut to size within specified tolerances in accordance with pattern specifications and company requirements, and there is minimum wastage.

2.3Sections are attached and all stitching is in accordance with designer specifications and company requirements.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – straight and even, curves and bends uniform, no loose or missed stitches, seams overlap and shed water, weather proof.

2.4Windows are identified, aligned, and fitted in accordance with job and/or designer specifications and company requirements.

2.5Frame material is identified, assembled, and fitted to the boat in accordance with job and/or designer specifications and company requirements.

2.6Fabric is attached to frame in accordance with job and/or designer specifications and company requirements.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – secure attachment, no loose threads, no loose stitching, no wrinkles, no creases, no damage, lining clean, weatherproof.

2.7Fabric is cleaned for presentation to the customer in accordance with company requirements.

2.8Tools and equipment are cleaned and put away in their place in accordance with company requirements.

2.9Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.

Outcome 3

Prepare to repair a boat cockpit canopy and side curtains.

Evidence requirements

3.1Damage and repair procedures are identified in accordance with designer specifications and company requirements.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – fabric identification, side curtains, webbings, padding, framing, windows.

3.2Canopy is removed from the frame in accordance with company requirements, and undamaged parts are stored and secure.

Outcome 4

Repair a boat cockpit canopy and side curtains.

Evidence requirements

4.1Replacement fabric to repair damage is identified and is the same fabric as the original and/or company requirements.

4.2Fabric is cut, assembled, stitched, and/or bonded in accordance with job and/or design specifications and company requirements, and there are no breaks in the stitching and/or bonding.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – sewing machine, hand sewing, bonding;

stitching even, joints flat and even.

4.3Damaged section is repaired and there is no difference between the new section and the original.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – straight and even, curves and bends uniform, no loose or missed stitches.

4.4Damaged windows are identified and replaced in accordance with company requirements and customer and/or designer specifications.

4.5Frame damage is identified and repaired, and operates in accordance with the job and/or designer specifications and company requirements.

4.6Webbings and pads are repaired in accordance with job and/or designer specifications and company requirements.

4.7Fabric is attached to frame, and the frame operates in accordance with job and/or designer specifications and company requirements.

Rangemay include but is not limited to – secure; no loose threads, loose stitching, wrinkles, creases, damage; lining clean; weatherproof.

4.8Fabric is cleaned for presentation to the customer in accordance with company requirements.

4.9Tools and equipment are cleaned and put away in their place in accordance with company requirements.

4.10Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.
