Purpose

This qualification is designed to meet the requirements of people who are employed as machine operators in textile manufacturing workplaces. It recognises the basic knowledge and skills required to work in textile manufacturing and is a pathway to further education and training.

The Compulsory section covers the underpinning knowledge and skills required by a machine operator that relate to safe working practices and elementary knowledge of the operations, processes and products of textile manufacturing.

Elective A allows candidates to select relevant standards from a wide range of domains in the TextilesManufacture subfield.

Elective B allows candidates to select relevant standards from anywhere on the Directory of Assessment standards to support their learning and provide opportunities for broader development.

Successful completion of the qualification may lead to other specialised Competenz qualifications such as the National Certificate in Textiles Manufacture (Advanced Operations) (Level3) with strands in Textile Processing, and Textile Testing [Ref:1122], National Certificate in Textiles Manufacture (Fibre Blending) (Level4) with strands in Woollen Processing, and Semi-worsted and Worsted Processing [Ref:0151], National Certificate in Textiles Manufacture (Woven Fabric Technology) (Level 5) with strands in Weaving Technology, and Finishing Technology [Ref:0154], National Certificate in Wool Scouring (Early Stage Wool Processing) (Level 4) [Ref: 639], National Certificate in Wool Scouring (Advanced Operations) [Ref: 0076], National Diploma in Textiles Manufacture (Weaving) (Level 5) [Ref:0152], National Diploma in Textiles Manufacture (Woollen Yarn Processing) (Level5) [Ref:0153], or the National Diploma in Textiles Manufacture (Carding Technician) (Level 5) [Ref: 1739].

Replacement Information

Version 1 of this qualification and the National Certificate in Textiles Manufacture (Advanced Operations) with strands in Textile Processing and Textile Testing [Ref:1122] replaced the following qualifications:

Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard.

Version 4

Version 4 was issued following the review of the standards in the Wool Scouring domain standards and the revision of this qualification. Standards from the Wool Scouring domain were added to the qualification to promote transferability of credit across the different sectors of the textile manufacturing industry.

  • Standards 2446-2448 and 2452 were added to Elective A.

Previous versions of the qualification

Version 3 was issued following the review of standards in the Fabric Finishing and Woollen Yarn Processing domains.

Changes to structure and content included: new Unit 26000, Process yarn in a continuous heat setting line, was added to Elective A; the level and credit value of standard 2917 changed from Level 2, 3 credits to Level 3, 12 credits; and the title of standard 4174 was updated.

Candidates transferring from the replaced qualifications to the National Certificate in Textiles Manufacture (Operations) (Level 2) [Ref: 1121] (see below for more information about the replaced qualifications) and who are already credited with any version of standards 2897, 5876, 5877, and 5878 can use them for exemptions as follows:

People currently enrolled in programmes leading towards the award of version 2 of this qualification may either complete that version, or transfer to version 3.

Version 2 was issued following the introduction of the Non-Woven Textiles domain to the NQF. Level 2 unit standards in the Non-Woven Textiles domain were added as options in the Elective A section of the qualification but the total credits did not change.

Version 1 of this qualification and the National Certificate in Textiles Manufacture (Advanced Operations) with strands in Textile Processing and Textile Testing [Ref:1122] replaced the following qualifications:

Changes to structure and content included: unit standard 497 removed; 19841 replaced unit standards 5876, 5877 and 5878 which are included in the level 3 qualification; Elective A covers all sectors previously covered individually by the replaced qualifications; Elective B allows for the selection of credits from anywhere on the NQF. The maximum of 5 elective credits from the Textiles Manufacture subfield was removed; other sector specific unit standards previously included in the level 2 qualifications are included in the level 3 qualification; the minimum total credits have been reduced from 50-66 to 40.

This certificate will display the logos of NZQA, Competenz and the organisation that has been granted consent to assess against standards that meet the requirements of the qualification (accredited).

Quality Management Systems
