110 Lode Program and Ottimo Program:

Direct Enrollment and Study at Universita’ degli Studi di Firenze

FAIRFIELD UNIVERSITY FLORENCE 110LODE program is an excellent choice for students who desire the challenge of taking classes entirely in Italian at the world-renowned Universita’ degli Studi di Firenze. This program began in 2008 when a bilateral cultural agreement was signed with the University of Florence allowing Fairfield University Florence students to enroll in a wide variety of courses in the Schools of Letters and Humanities --

Admission Requirements
Students interested in the 110Lode Program must have studied Italian for at least 4 semesters or the equivalent and must have acquired a good command of the language. Students interested in the Ottimo Program must have studied Italian for at least 2 semesters or the equivalent and must have acquired a fair command of the language.
Qualified students will be admitted based on their academic record, recommendation by a current Italian instructor, a Direct Enrollment Application for 110Lode and Ottimo Program(See “How to apply” section for more information) . An interview in Italian will be conducted upon student’s arrival in Florence.

110Lode Course General Overview and preliminary Information
Students may enroll in up to three corsi singoli (3 modules of 30 hours) in selected departments of the two Facolta’.
The academic coordinator, Prof. Lisa Friend will meet with students individually to advise them on their course selection upon arrival in Florence; before arrival students will correspond with Prof. Friend regarding course interests and selections availabilities..
Each student will be assigned an academic Italian tutor recommended by the module professor, a scholar selected purposely to guide 110Lode Program students through the semester, helping them prepare for class and for the final exams. Fairfield will arrange these tutor sessions for the students at no additional cost.
Courses typically end with a final oral exam. Students electing to take classes in the Political Sciences departments may, in special cases, be permitted to give final oral exams in English, although all classes will be conducted in Italian.
Courses for one UNIFI module are usually worth 3 credits (including 30 classroom contact hours, 5 hours with Advanced Italian Studies Coordinator, Prof. Friend, and 10 hours with the academic tutor).
Students can choose to combine 110Lode Programcourses with regular courses offered at the Fairfield/Florence University of the Arts campus and/or with Ottimo Program courses offered at the Centro di Cultura per Stanieri at the Universita’ di Firenze --.

Students who opt to be in both the 110Lode or Ottimo Program and the Academic Internship Program are generally advised to enroll for a total of 12 credits with Fairfield University Florence Program.

Ottimo Program courses offered at the Centro di Cultura per Stanieri at the Universita’ di Firenze(click for link) are primarily intensive Italian classes with students from around Europe, and include some content-cultural classes as electives.
