Purpose / This unit standard is for people in the signmaking industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of high level access equipment used in signmaking work, and use access equipment for signmaking work.

Explanatory notes

All work practices shall meet the requirements of relevant legislation, including Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991, Building Act 2004, and the requirements of industry codes of practice and documented enterprise procedures in respect to health, safety, and environmental matters. For this unit standard the following code of practice also applies – Approved Code of Practice for the Safe Erection and Use of Scaffolding, 1995, Occupational Safety and Health Service of the Department of Labour.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of high level access equipment used in signmaking work.

Rangeincludes but is not limited to – ladders, extension ladders, trestles, scaffolds, trailer/truck mounted towers, scissor lifts, suspended stages, building maintenance units.

Evidence requirements

1.1Equipment used for access in signmaking work is identified, and described in terms of the situations in which each would be used.

1.2Equipment is explained in terms of safety features.

1.3Equipment is described in terms of maintenance requirements.

1.4All regulations, by-laws, and codes of practice governing the use and operation of equipment are identified.

Use access equipment for signmaking work.

Evidence requirements

2.1Equipment required for access to site is selected and arrangements made for on site availability to comply with job schedule.

2.2Equipment is set up according to manufacturer's specifications.

2.3All permits and compliance certificates are obtained.

2.4All equipment and machinery is removed, cleaned, and stored as specified in the hire contract or according to company policy.
