Explanatory notes

1All workplace practices must meet any applicable and recognised codes of practice, and documented workplace health, safety, and environmental procedures for personal, product, workplace health, safety, and environmental matters, and the obligations required under current law including the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, Resource Management Act 1991, Privacy Act 1993 and their subsequent amendments.

2Workplace practices refer to the documented procedures for the machine and/or workplace.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of ink viscosity.

Evidence requirements

1.1The term ‘viscosity’ is defined.

1.2Reasons for measuring viscosity levels are explained in terms of the viscosity ranges used in the workplace.

1.3Variations in ink viscosity levels are explained in terms of the reasons for these occurring.

Rangetoo high, too low.

1.4Problems associated with viscosity levels being too high or too low are described.

1.5The conditions required to establish accurate viscosity levels are described in terms of workplace practices.

1.6Reasons for viscosity changes occurring are described.

Rangemay include – evaporation during production running, foaming, temperature changes, pH changes.

Outcome 2

Use a viscosity measuring device.

Evidence requirements

2.1The sequential steps in using the viscosity measuring device available in the workplace are described in terms of workplace practices and manufacturer’s instructions.

2.2The known viscosity of water is confirmed by stopwatch and by viscosity measuring device in accordance with workplace practices.

Outcome 3

Demonstrate knowledge of ink components, ink additives, and ink hazards.

Evidence requirements

3.1Components of inks used in the workplace are described.

Rangevarnishes, pigments.

3.2Ink additives available in the workplace are described in terms of their use.

Rangemay include but are not limited to – antifoaming agents, extenders, pH adjusters, water.

3.3The hazards generated by inks are described, and Material Safety Data (MSD) sheets are used to provide the actions to be taken in the event of an accident.

Please note

Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.

Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
