10.02 Kennedy Foreign Policy Chirps

Social media has emerged as a powerful means of instant communication and information sharing. What if social media had existed during the Kennedy Administration?

Choose a historical figure from our lesson or simply create your own character to writetwo fictional “chirps” (Bay of Pigs and Berlin Crisis) from his or her perspective. Your character may be from the United States, the Soviet Union, Cuba, or East or West Germany.

Remember that “chirps” are limited to 150 characters, so be concise.

Things to consider before choosing your character and writing your chirp:

  • What was the outcome of this event and what lessons were learned?
  • How did this event contribute to already strained relations between the U.S. and Soviet Union and/or the U.S. and Cuba/Germany?
  • How would your character (real or fiction) feel about the event?
  • What hashtag would be appropriate for the situation?
  • What is your nickname/username? Remember, this may have been a covert operation or you may be a member of Kennedy’s foreign policy team who can’t reveal a real identity or release top secret information from the situation room.

Bay of Pigs Chirp

  • You may choose to be from Cuba, the United States, or the Soviet Union. Your chirp should reflect an understanding of the Bay of Pigs Incident.
  • Write a chirp based on your character’s reaction to Kennedy’s actions during the Bay of Pigs Invasion.
  • Be creative. Your chirp should include information that reflects the historical significance of the Bay of Pigs Incident.
