As a manager responsible for your teams’ professional development, how do you know if the organization’s investment in your project managers is targeting the correct skills? As a practitioner, are your decisions about professional development related to those factors that most contribute to your efficacy and the organization’s success? This presentation addresses the potential conflict in goals and measurement of success from three different perspectives: project outcomes, project management processes, and the project manager’s influence on the project. Each of these perspectives of success shifts the focus on different skills and knowledge. This new tri-focal lens offers practitioners and managers a new way to focus allocation of their professional development budgets and lends insights to hiring criteria. Implications for practice are presented based on various stakeholder perspectives, including IT executives, project management practitioners, hiring managers, and resource managers.

Chuck Millhollan
Chuck is the Director of Program Management for Churchill Downs Incorporated and has over 25 years of experience in personnel and project management. In addition to his work as a practitioner, Chuck develops curriculum and teaches for several accredited universities and contributed to Dr. Harold Kerzner’s texts, Project Management Best Practices: Achieving Global Excellence, 2nd Edition published in February 2010 and Project Management Metrics, KPIs and Dashboards published in August 2011.
Chuck is a member of the International Institute of Business Analysis, a senior member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ), and a member of the Project Management Institute (PMI) and Kentuckiana PMI chapter.
Chuck earned his Bachelor of Science in Management in 1993 through Southern Illinois University, his Master of Business Administration from the University of Florida in 2000, a Master of Science in Project Management from the University of Wisconsin in 2003, and is a doctoral student with Syracuse University.
