RTFO Bottle Cleaner:
Here at the Oklahoma DOT we are using a Temyrox to clean our RTFO bottles. It is a
glass cleaning oven made by the Temyrox Comapany (1-800-584-8010, 1-214-484-8010).
This oven is very heavy. I put the bottom shelf with the catalyst on the top shelf.
It works better that way.
It has worked out well for us. After we rinse the bottles with deionized water, dry
them in an oven, they are ready to go. Superpave requires us to use so many more
RTFO bottles that this has become a great time and money saver for us.
Handling tip for RTFO Bottles:
One of the things that I hated most was to scrap the RTFO bottles. I am using a
silicone rubber mitten (Hot-Hand Protector) now. It can handle temperatures of
-57 to 260 degrees C. I got it from the Fisher Catalog 95/96 page 1901. It has a
Bel-Art* No. F38000-0000 Cat. No. 11-394-300. 1-800-766-7000
Specifications for RTFO Bottles:
The thickness spec for the lip seems to tight. AMRL disqualified over half of our
bottles for that reason. I contend that this thickness limit is of little on no
consequence.
Scraper Tip:
I angled our scraper to allow for better scrapping. Example drawing below.

I agree strongly. The glass cleaning oven is a great addition to an
asphalt lab. I've seen it used in many labs with smiles as a result.
This oven will clean glassware that has been stained for years, not just
RTFO bottles. With improvements such as this, labs can concentrate on
DSR RTFO aged results without worrying about the "bottleneck" of hours
of cleaning glass. It also eliminates solvents.

We wash the RTFO bottles to remove the ash. It is a good practice. Bob
McGennis probably has the most experience with the Cleaning Oven.

Yes, it has increased our productivity at Idaho Asphalt. Do you need to
wash bottles after oven cleaning to remove ash?
