1PROGRAMME OVERVIEW
The programme is designed to focus on the individual – developing the skills and behaviours needed to become an effective club leader. Delegates will get the opportunity to learn from inspirational leaders from the world of sport and business, this learning will then be translated and applied to the context of gymnastics clubs in Scotland. Part of the learning will be through shared experiences discussing issues that are current and relevant based on club examples. There will also be an emphasis on self-reflection, action learning and continuing development to ensure the learning will be sustainable and carry on well beyond the life of the programme. Our vision is: A strong Scottish Gymnastics, inspiring & nurturing emerging talent.
1.1Areas of focus
We have developed a Leadership Framework which will drive the content of the programme. Research has shown there are certain behaviours that need to be of critical focus to be a great leader. Each heading shown in the diagram below covers a list of specific aspects that will be covered across the year. If you are interested to see the full framework then please let us know.
Each leadership session will focus on one of the areas from the framework and will be led by one of our external experts to inspire and challenge. Each afternoon will then be facilitated by Scottish Gymnastics to help bring the subject matter to life in a gymnastics context. The means to achieve this will be through: stronger, better managed, better financed clubs working to business plans with world class volunteers driving them and an ambition to get more professional members of staff.

1.3Programme elements
The programme encourages and supports club leaders to take ownership of, and responsibility for, their own learning. It consists of five core elements all of which are essential for the critical learning and development that will take place during the 12 months.
•Workshops and Inspiring Leaders events
•Mentoring
•Mapping their Compass for Life
•Home Teams Networking
•Further learning
1.3.1Workshops and Inspiring Leaders events
•Workshops are an integral part of the learning process and will be designed to meet the needs of the learners. Attendance at all workshops is critical to get the most out of the programme.
•There will be sixleadership workshops focusing on all areas of the leadership competency framework. The first session will be over two days with an overnight stay in Stirling. Part of each session will be delivered by an external speaker who will inspire and challenge thinking around a particular competency.
•There will also be a workshop on the effective club framework designed to complement the leadership specific sessions.
•Workshops will have clear learning outcomes and be tailored to maximise learning; they will be challenging, constructive and highly interactive.
•Three Inspiring Leaders events will also be included across the programme tagged onto leadership workshops. These will be an evening of discussion and networking for those people currently engaged in club leadership.
1.3.2Compass for Life Mapping and 360 feedback
•Each club leader will map a Compass for Life based on the work of Floyd Woodrow. This will help each leader to plot a vision, set goals and actions in order to help consolidate their learning.
•This process is supported through the workshops and a 360 feedback process facilitated by Scottish Gymnastics that the club leader undertakes with their colleagues providing valuable, contemporary and honest feedback.
•Mentors will assist the club leader to revise their plans and help them monitor their progress.
1.3.3Mentoring
•Mentoring is a vital element allowing the club leader to learn from their experiences. Mentors can also act as a sounding board and to support the leaders to achieve their goals in their Personal Development Plan.
•Each club leader will build a strong relationship with one mentor who will be sourced by Scottish Gymnastics. If a club leader already has their own mentor this can be discussed with the programme lead.
•Mentors are volunteers and will be offered some opportunities to support their learning and development including invitations to events and workshops where appropriate.
•Meetings or phone calls between club leaders and mentors should take place three times in the year as a minimum.
1.3.4Home Teams Networking
•This element focuses on peer support and providing opportunities for the club leader to define, frame and communicate their key challenges and receive support from their counterparts at other gymnastics clubs.
•Leaders will be grouped into Home Teams where there will be a networking and a competitive aspect across the programme to score points for an overall end of programme prize!
•The sessions allow the club leaders to have time to reflect on their experiences and to explore ways of doings things differently.
•We also encourage club leaders to team up in groups of three to four and commit to meeting quarterly – which can be by conference call or face-to-face to share learning and support one anotherand also to consider the setting up of a virtual group through facebook or LinkedIn.
1.3.5Further Learning
•Over the course of the programme there will be an opportunity to access some online learning which can be completed at your own pace. This will include time management and other topics will be confirmed during the course of the year but will be complimentary to the leadership framework.
•A reading list and suggested videos will be provided and club leaders will be encouraged to explore some of the titles during the course of the programme.
